Providence Gears Up For NCAA Tournament Excitement

Basketball fans to flock to the city as NCAA Tournament returns after nearly a decade.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Excitement is palpable as the city of Providence gears up to host NCAA Tournament games for the first time since 2016. Starting March 17, 2025, tens of thousands of basketball fans are expected to flock to the capital city, eager to witness the action-packed first two rounds of the men’s tournament.

“Providence is going to shine, Rhode Island’s going to shine, and all the networks and all the games that are going to be on national TV, they’re going to be focused on the AMP right here in Providence,” said Governor Dan McKee during a press conference on Tuesday.

The event will unfold at the Amica Mutual Pavilion (AMP), where four games are set to take place on Thursday, March 20, followed by two more on Saturday, March 22. Doors will open at 10 a.m. on Thursday, creating a festive atmosphere downtown as bars and restaurants prepare for the influx of fans.

Local establishments are gearing up for what they hope will be a massive boost in business. Murphy’s has announced plans for a large 50-foot tent to accommodate fans outside, and Moonshine Alley will provide shuttle services transporting attendees to and from the AMP. There are plans to close off several streets to enable block parties and various events, contributing to the vibrant environment in the city.

Here’s how the schedule for the games on Thursday looks:

  • 12:40 p.m. (4) Purdue vs. (13) High Point

  • 3:15 p.m. (5) Clemson vs. (12) McNeese

  • 7:10 p.m. (7) Kansas vs. (10) Arkansas

  • 9:45 p.m. (2) St. John’s vs. (15) Omaha

The evening match featuring St. John’s marks the return of Rick Pitino, a notable figure in Rhode Island’s basketball history, who previously coached Providence College during the mid-1980s.

Each winning team from Thursday will advance to the second round, with games scheduled for Saturday. While the detailed schedule for those matches is yet to be announced, expectations are high as anticipation builds among players and fans alike.

Local officials and business owners are optimistic that the tournament will not only provide energy and excitement to Providence but will also have a significant economic impact. Many are counting on this tournament to highlight the city on a national stage, potentially spurring future events and tourism.
