A manhunt is underway for a 33-year-old man, Jamie Cooper, who escaped from a GEOAmey prison van earlier today while being transported to court. The incident occurred on March 19, 2025, at approximately 8:54 AM on the M55 motorway near junction 2 close to Catforth. Cooper was en route to Lancaster Magistrates Court when he reportedly “overpowered” escort officers after the van was halted to manage a supposed medical emergency.
Officials from Lancashire Police have confirmed that they received a report of the escape at 8:54 AM and subsequently warned the public not to approach Cooper if spotted, urging them to call 999 immediately. The police described Cooper as being 5 feet 7 inches tall and of medium build with short, cropped hair. At the time of his escape, he was believed to be wearing a blue coat, blue jeans, and black trainers.
Cooper is from Blackpool and has ties to the Bolton area, which has led police to increase their presence in those communities during the ongoing search operations. A police spokesperson reassured the public concerning the rarity of such incidents in Lancashire, emphasizing their commitment to returning Cooper to custody.
According to reports from GEOAmey, the escape was facilitated when guards pulled over on the M55 to deal with an on-board medical emergency. It was during this time that Cooper managed to overpower the escort officers and escaped from the transport vehicle. This dramatic evasion attracted significant media attention as community members expressed concern over the incident.
As the search expands, law enforcement is conducting invasive searches in the Catforth area. Police are also conducting comprehensive investigations while urging individuals who may have information related to Cooper’s whereabouts to come forward.
“We know that this may be concerning to hear about, but we want to reassure you that incidents like these are extremely rare in Lancashire and it is something we are taking incredibly seriously,” a police spokesperson stated. “Searches and an investigation are ongoing, and you will see an increase in our officers in the area as they continue their enquiries. If you have any concerns, please do approach them as they are out and about.”
Cooper had been facing charges of assaulting a police officer and criminal damage prior to this harebrained escape. As the public remains vigilant, police continue to heavily patrol both Blackpool and Bolton, where it is believed Cooper may seek refuge.
In light of the developments, anyone who sees Cooper is urged not to confront him due to potential risks associated with his escape. The ongoing investigation into the circumstances of the incident has also raised questions about the protocols in place during prisoner transports and the actions taken by escort officers when interruptions occur during transit.
As police continue their hunt for Cooper, community members are advised to stay alert. Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to report it by calling 101 and referencing log 0237 of March 19.
