Recently, the UK's Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) announced investigations against TikTok, Reddit, and Imgur due to their handling of children's personal data. These platforms utilize complex algorithms to engage users, but this practice raises alarms as it can expose minors to harmful content. The ICO's inquiry aims to assess how TikTok processes the data of users aged 13 to 17 and how Reddit and Imgur assess the age of their underage users.

According to the ICO, "If we find sufficient evidence of wrongdoing by these companies, we will approach them for their comments before making any final decisions." This proactive stance follows previous legislative measures aimed at bolstering protections for minors online, including stricter age verification mandates to block access to harmful content.

Simultaneously, another noteworthy event has emerged from Germany, where companies express concerns over generative AI solutions, particularly those originating from outside Europe. Many businesses prefer AI solutions "made in Germany," valuing data origin as substantial. Reports reveal 84% of German companies favor AI providers from within the country, with the USA and the EU following closely. The rise of Chinese AI services like DeepSeek has prompted data protection officials such as Denis Lehmkemper to raise alarms about potential laxity in data compliance.

Lehmkemper cited, "Chinese companies must comply with EU citizens' data protection standards when offering their apps within Europe," but warned about DeepSeek's questionable adherence to these regulations. Notably, the service's data policy suggests it collects and analyzes any inputs and uploaded documents without restrictions, flagging significant concerns among regulators.

With DeepSeek, the risks involve not only compliance but also the threat of data misuse. The inability to monitor data handling effectively raises fears of government access, as the company can be compelled under Chinese law to share data with state security. Consequently, several German data protection authorities are starting collective investigations against DeepSeek to clarify representation within the EU.

These revelations come alongside academic research emphasizing the potential ramifications of using AI tools and generative models without careful consideration of privacy. Researchers Hannah Ruschemeier and Rainer Mühlhoff highlighted how the improper use of anonymized data can lead to discrimination, particularly when AI tools, initially intended for benevolent applications, are repurposed for more unethical uses, such as evaluating job applicants based on voice analysis.

Ruschemeier noted, "Without precise definitions of what constitutes public benefit, even well-meaning applications can lead to malicious outcomes. Using data for AI models could reinforce discrimination or serve profit-driven agendas rather than the common good." Mühlhoff echoed this sentiment, cautioning about the dual-use potential of sensitive health data transformed via AI training, which could eventually exclude individuals from opportunities based on predicted health conditions.

Another real concern is the effective anonymization of data used for training AI models. Mühlhoff explained, "Once data is anonymized, protections under data privacy laws cease to apply, giving rise to new privacy risks dubbed ‘predictive privacy’." This term refers to predictions made about individuals based on anonymized data sets, which may not contain any identifiable information about those who contributed to the dataset but could still generate re-identifiable insights.

The recent discussions around the European Health Data Space (EHDS) and secondary data usage reveal gaps where commercial interests could exploit health data for purposes beyond medical end-user benefit, leading to breaches of patient trust and potential discrimination. Some regulations permit secondary use but lack sufficient checks to prevent misuse or unauthorized access.

Against this backdrop, numerous organizations are searching for ways to balance the convenience of AI tools with privacy protection. Enter Frank Börncke, who developed "Private Prompts," software aimed at enabling individuals to keep their sensitive data secure when utilizing AI technologies like ChatGPT. The application allows users to replace personal information with pseudonyms before submission to AI models, reducing the risk of data being retained or otherwise mishandled.

Börncke emphasized the importance of local solutions, avoiding dependence on untrustworthy external providers. His software was borne from personal experience where most online anonymization services fell short due to oversights during data entry. His aim is to make it easier for users to retain their privacy without sacrificing the utility of intelligent technologies.
