Prince Frederik of Luxembourg has passed away at just 22 years old after battling POLG mitochondrial disease for nearly half his life. On March 1, 2025, his father, Prince Robert, shared the heartbreaking news through the POLG Foundation, which Frederik established to raise awareness for the rare condition affecting energy production within the cells.
Frederik was diagnosed with POLG mitochondrial disease at the age of 14 after years of unexplained health issues. This genetic disorder impairs the body's ability to produce energy and can lead to progressive organ failure. The disease affects approximately 1 in 5,000 people and was termed to be the second-most common serious genetic disorder, following cystic fibrosis.
Despite his diagnosis, Frederik's vibrant spirit never waned. "It is with a very heavy heart... Frederik," expressed Prince Robert. He recalled his son’s determination to not allow his illness to define him and instead focus on advocacy and making a difference for those suffering from similar conditions. Even as his health deteriorated, Frederik continued engaging with the community and contributing to research.
On February 28, the eve of Rare Disease Day, the young prince gathered his family one last time to say goodbye. This heartfelt farewell was punctuated by anecdotes, humor, and love. "Frederik found the strength... his last moments," Prince Robert wrote, noting how Frederik shared thoughtful parting messages with each family member. He humorously concluded his farewells with a long-standing family joke, showcasing his remarkable ability to inject humor even during trying times.
Reflecting on their last conversation, Prince Robert recounted how Frederik asked, "Papa, are you proud of me?" This simple yet powerful inquiry encapsulated Frederik’s desire for validation and assurance of his contributions throughout his short life. "Frederik knows... our family," Robert assured him, emphasizing the light his son brought to those around him.
Frederik's battle with POLG did not halt his drive to make significant contributions. He became deeply involved with research and participated actively in medical trials, collaborating with professionals across Switzerland, the United States, and Europe. He was dedicated to aiding others suffering from mitochondrial diseases. His commitment led to the creation of the POLG Foundation, founded to support research initiatives and find treatments for this rare condition.
He also initiated the MITO clothing line, inspired by his commitment to raise awareness about POLG mitochondrial disease, echoing the creative spirit of fashion designer Donna Karan. His father recounted, "Frederik fought his disease valiantly... through the hardest of physical and mental challenges." This resilience served as both inspiration and comfort to those who loved him.
Frederik's legacy, the foundation he built, will carry on his mission to alleviate the suffering surrounding mitochondrial diseases. Prince Robert has pledged to continue this important work, ensuring their efforts never cease, stating, "On behalf of Frederik... we will be resolutely focused on alleviating suffering for the POLG community and other diseases... associated with mitochondrial diseases."
Tragically, as his health declined, Frederik was hospitalized due to pneumonia and severe infection just weeks before his passing. Despite the challenges he faced, his spirit shone brightly, embodying the values of encouragement and kindness fosters hope and strength.
Frederik died within the embrace of his family, surrounded by love and laughter—immersed within the warmth of familial connection. His passage on March 1 came as the world recognized Rare Disease Day, marking the poignant intersection of personal loss and the enduring need for awareness surrounding genetic disorders.
His family mourns the loss of their beloved prince, remembering him as "the strongest person we know." With Frederik gone, the world has lost a passionate advocate, but his contributions will endure through the foundation, creating hope for future generations facing similar obstacles. His light may have been extinguished far too soon, but through his work and the promise of his continuing message, Frederik's legacy will undoubtedly shine on.
