Portland Timbers Defeat Colorado Rapids 3-0 In Commerce City

The loss marks Colorado's first of the season, highlighting defensive struggles at home.

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. — The Colorado Rapids suffered a disappointing 3-0 defeat to the Portland Timbers at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on March 22, 2025. This marked the first loss of the season for the Rapids, who had come into the match with two wins and two draws. The defeat highlighted ongoing issues for the Rapids, particularly their difficulty in defending at home.

In a match that was anticipated to showcase the Rapids’ offensive prowess, particularly during the first half, the tide turned unexpectedly due to an own goal just before halftime. Colorado’s Josh Atencio inadvertently redirected a low cross from Portland’s David Da Costa into his own net in the second minute of first-half stoppage time. This mishap put the Timbers ahead 1-0 and set a negative tone for the rest of the match.

The Rapids entered the second half with hopes of turning the tide but were quickly met with further disappointment. Just three minutes into the half, Portland midfielder Antony fired a stunning right-footed shot from outside the box past Rapids goalkeeper Adam Beaudry, doubling the Timbers’ lead to 2-0. Antony’s goal marked his fifth goal against Colorado in as many matches over the past two years, proving to be a persistent threat.

As they tried to mount a comeback, the Rapids were unable to convert their opportunities into goals. Despite some energetic efforts from the home side, it was the Timbers who would strike again. In the 75th minute, Kevin Kelsy, who had just entered the match, found the back of the net with a left-footed shot, solidifying the Timbers’ lead at 3-0.

Adam Beaudry, making his first home start for the Rapids at just 18 years old, tallied three saves during the match. He had a challenging outing, with Portland's potent offense continuously testing his defenses. Beaudry, who debuted against Austin FC on October 19, 2024, now holds the distinction of being the youngest goalkeeper in Colorado Rapids history to start a match.

Although the Rapids struggled defensively, their offensive efforts did show moments of promise. They came out swinging early, attempting to latch onto some early crosses. For instance, Rafael Navarro nearly made contact with two low balls that could have resulted in goals on another day. However, the Rapids were ultimately unable to capitalize on these chances.

Despite the loss, the Rapids are looking ahead to their next match against Charlotte FC on March 29, 2025, where they hope to reset and find their rhythm. The Timbers, now with a record of 2-1-2, will head home to face Houston on March 30, 2025, fresh off their first road victory of the season.

This game not only exemplifies the learning curve the Rapids face with a young squad but also reinforces some of the challenges they need to address as they move through the season. Josh Atencio's own goal, while a major contributor to the loss, serves as a reminder of the pressure young players face when navigating the rigors of professional soccer.
