Pope Francis Stability Update After Recent Hospitalization

The Pontiff’s condition improves as worldwide prayers continue for his health

Pope Francis has shown signs of recovery after experiencing respiratory complications last week. His recent health struggles garnered concern among believers worldwide, but as of March 2, 2025, he has stabilized at Rome's Gemelli Polyclinic.

Following his hospitalization on February 14, 2025, due to pneumonia and respiratory distress, the Pope faced significant health challenges including broncospasmo and high-flow oxygen therapy. Thankfully, the Vatican has reported positive updates on his condition, stating he has been able to engage with his daily activities, including reading newspapers, drinking coffee, and continuing his medical therapies.

On Sunday morning, the Holy Father expressed his gratitude via the written text of his Angelus, acknowledging the support from the faithful. "I feel upheld by all the People of God; during such moments we learn to trust even more in the Lord," Pope Francis noted, indicating his deep connection with the global community praying for his health.

Despite improvements, the Vatican's medical bulletin cautions continued vigilance due to the complex nature of the Pope's health. Reports indicate he remained vigilant and alert, working with medical professionals. "The situation is improving and continues to be monitored closely," stated Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni.

Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican's Secretary of State, alongside Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra, visited the pontiff to discuss various Church matters. This visit marks their second time since he was hospitalized. The purpose was highlighted as one of both pastoral care and administrative necessity.

Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco, the former president of the Italian Bishops’ Conference, commented on the dialogue surrounding potential resignation due to health concerns—a topic undesired among many. "It's inappropriate to discuss resignations. The Church is united in prayer around the Pope for the fastest possible recovery," Bagnasco conveyed to Repubblica.

Global prayer activities have increased, particularly from communities like the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church. Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk voiced his support, urging continued prayers for the Pope, acknowledging his previous commitment to peace efforts and the difficulties he faces now.

Outside the Gemelli Hospital, dedicated groups continue to gather, demonstrating their faith through prayers and the singing of hymns under the statue of St. John Paul II. These gatherings evoke hope and connection, with attendees expressing their love and prayers for the Pope.

While the Pope can move and converse, his prognosis remains guarded as he continues to battle the complications of pneumonia. The medical team confirmed no fever and stable hemodynamic parameters, alongside successful responses to his oxygen therapy; he has not experienced any recent respiratory crises since last Friday.

The Pope's routine also includes physiotherapy and moments of personal prayer. His hope shines through his message, where he highlights the blessing found within fragility, stating: "I feel like sharing the condition of many sick and suffering people" as he passed the Eucharist during his hospital stay.

Calls for peace resonate strongly in his thoughts, with his recent message reflecting on the absurdity of conflict from his hospital bedside. He urged prayers for Ukraine, Palestine, Israel, Lebanon, Myanmar, Sudan, and Kivu, hoping for unity and peace worldwide.

Cardinal Bagnasco added, "The Church remains steadfast, and the Pope is present with our faith—even when physically unwell." This sentiment captures the essence of the faithful's prayers and support for the Pope as he continues this challenging phase of his life.

The Holy Father concluded his writing with heartfelt thanks to those praying for him: "I feel your affection and proximity; I find strength and solace from the entire People of God. I pray for all of you, especially for peace." This wrap of warmth and reassurance highlights the Pope's enduring connection to the Church, ensuring he remains at the heart of its mission even from the confines of the hospital.
