Baja California is set to face severe weather conditions due to the arrival of cold front number 32 on Thursday, March 6, 2025. According to the Comisión Nacional del Agua (Conagua), this will result in significant drops in temperature, rainfall, strong winds, and increased wave activity along the coastline.
The forecast predicts minimum temperatures for mountainous regions to plummet to between -10 and -5 °C, bringing frost and potentially even snowfall to these areas. Rainfall accumulations are expected to vary between 25 and 50 mm, creating risks of flooding, landslides, and swollen waterways across the region.
Wind gusts will pose another threat, reaching between 70 and 90 km/h, which could lead to dangerous driving conditions and significantly reduce visibility on the roads. The western coastline is also bracing for high waves, varying between 1 and 3 meters, creating additional hazards for maritime navigation.
On the ground, Tijuana is bracing for thunderstorms, including the possibility of hail. The temperature throughout the day is expected to fluctuate between 9°C and 14°C, with maximum readings occurring around 10:00 AM. Similarly, Mexicali forecasts show temperatures will range from 12°C to 20°C, peaking at 1:00 PM, with strong winds expected at speeds of up to 65 km/h.
Ensenada faces choppy weather, with temperatures between 11°C and 15°C. Rainfall and thunderstorms could dominate the area's weather with the maximum temperature expected near noon. Tecate, too, will experience similar conditions, including potential for nighttime hail with daytime temps fluctuated between 3°C and 10°C.
La Rumorosa is anticipated to be under significant weather duress, with expected temperatures ranging between 1°C and 7°C and wind gusts up to 105 km/h. Notably, areas like Playas de Rosarito will see showers and hail with temperatures ranging from 9°C to 14°C.
Further coastal areas, such as San Quintín and San Felipe, will see temperatures between 11°C and 20°C, highlighting how expansive the impact of the approaching cold front will be. San Pedro Mártir will also experience rainfall with temperatures between 2°C and 11°C.
Due to this looming weather threat, the Tijuana City Council has urged citizens to take necessary precautions. From the afternoon of Wednesday, March 5, through the night of Thursday, March 6, Tijuana's Mayor Ismael Burgueño Ruiz, along with José Luis Jiménez González, the head of the Civil Protection Directorate, are emphasizing safety as weather worsens.
With reports indicating an 80% probability of rainfall on the afternoon and evening of March 5, accompanied by temperatures dropping to between 18 and 10 degrees Celsius, it's clear the community needs to prepare.
Jiménez González has stated, "Temperatures are forecasted between 15 and 9 degrees Celsius, with significant rain chances," encouraging the public to drive with caution during inclement weather and avoid flooded areas whether by foot or vehicle.
He also emphasized the importance of keeping vulnerable populations, such as children and seniors, protected during these periods of cold. Utilizing safe heating methods inside homes is equally advised, along with reminders about avoiding the use of open flames indoors.
Citizens are also encouraged to report hazardous situations, such as structural irregularities or land instability, immediately to emergency services. Jiménez González underscored, "Citizens must report any risk situations immediately to the emergency number 9-1-1."
The public is urged to stay informed about the weather conditions through local authorities' social media and channels. With the possibility of severe weather affecting various aspects of daily life, the community is reminded to remain vigilant and prioritize safety.
