ORLANDO – After two challenging months of recovery, Orlando Magic forward Paolo Banchero made his triumphant return to the court on January 10, 2024, against the Milwaukee Bucks. The 2024 NBA All-Star had spent over two months on the sidelines due to an oblique tear suffered on October 30, leaving the Magic to navigate the season with significant injuries among their roster.
Banchero did not allow the lengthy layoff to diminish his spirits or dampen his ambitions. "Yeah, those two months away were tough," he reflected. "But I think I did a really good job of just keeping my spirits high throughout — whether it was just being around the team, being around my family, friends, and keeping myself motivated with the work I was doing to get back onto the court." His commitment to his rehabilitation paid off during his return, where he impressively logged 34 points, seven rebounds, and three assists, even though the Magic narrowly lost the game 109-106.
Banchero's comeback is especially significant for the Magic, who have remained competitive throughout the early part of the season. Despite multiple injuries, including fellow forward Franz Wagner’s oblique injury, the Magic hold the fifth spot in the Eastern Conference, showcasing their depth and resilience.
Reflecting on his time off the court, Banchero emphasized how the experience allowed him to grow. "The toughest part was just missing out on competition... Obviously, they did a really good job of getting wins and playing at a high level. But as a competitor, you just want to be out there," he stated.
Following his return, Banchero has demonstrated he can easily return to elite performance levels. Over his three games back, he's been averaging 25.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and one block per game, shooting 49% from the field.
The Magic's next major test is against the Boston Celtics, the reigning NBA champions, on January 12 at TD Garden. This game will be significant, not only as another opportunity for Banchero and the Magic to assert themselves but as a potential playoff preview. "You always get up to play the Celtics," Banchero noted. "They’ve been the best team in the East since I’ve been NBA. You always are up to play the Celtics. A loaded team… That’s a great challenge." This matchup promises to provide both teams with the chance to claim momentum as they push toward the postseason.
Banchero’s dedication to the game spills over from the court to his personal life as well. Recently, he shared his excitement about acquiring his forever home, which includes a full NBA regulation court. Inspired by NBA superstar Kevin Durant, who advised him to embrace his role as the face of the franchise, Banchero found his new residence after KD’s push. "You’re the No 1 pick. The face of the franchise. You got to live like it," Durant encouraged.
Giving fans an inside look, Banchero described his home and court setup, enthusiastically calling it his "sanctuary." "This is why I got the house," Banchero beamed, showcasing his full 94-foot regulation court with his logo inscribed at the center. He expressed hopes to spend ample time developing his skills there over the summer.
Despite physical challenges, Banchero’s aspirations remain high as he eyes the All-Star game, knowing the competition will be fierce after his recent injuries. “The hope is still there to be an All-Star… whether we make it or not… I think we’ve played well enough,” he asserted, mentioning his confidence alongside Wagner, who is also recognized for his talent.
Leading up to the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday, Banchero recalled the importance of basketball during this time, emphasizing the joy and unity it brings. "Whenever we’re celebrating Martin Luther King, I always feel like there should be some good basketball being played," he noted, underlining the intersection of sports and social reflection.
Looking forward to the matchup against the Celtics, Banchero remained focused on his performance and the meaning of each game. "You got to kind of watch me play the rest of these games before All-Star reserves are selected… I’m not trying to plead my case," he remarked about his chances, alluding to the rigors of competition.
With January 12 quickly approaching, all eyes will be on Banchero as he continues to rebuild both his physical stamina and contributions to the team. Fans are optimistic as he steps up to face one of the NBA’s toughest teams with the knowledge of how much he means to the Magic’s future.
