OnlyFans Creators Face Stalking And Exploitation Issues

Survivors of stalking share alarming safety concerns amid exploitation reports on OnlyFans.

OnlyFans, the popular content subscription service, is increasingly under scrutiny for the safety and exploitation concerns it poses for its creators. Taylor Ryan, a 27-year-old model, recently shared her harrowing experience of being stalked by one of her subscribers, highlighting the darker side of life for content creators on the platform.

Ryan, who has found success on OnlyFans after starting four years ago, recalled how one subscriber escalated from innocuous messaging to unsettling real-life interactions. "It was a subscriber I had spoken to on OnlyFans, but never in real life. He would occasionally message me about things I was doing, but I always assumed he had seen it on my story or something...On a few different occasions he would say, 'I think I've just driven past you' when I was just walking to my car," she said. Warning signs mounted and after receiving increasingly creepy messages, including one stating she looked 'cosy' at home, she sought police intervention.

Ryan’s situation is not unique. An investigation published based on police reports obtained under Freedom of Information laws paints a grim picture of the realities many OnlyFans creators face. Reports reveal alarming accounts of women coerced by violent partners, allegations of sexual abuse, and dangerously invasive behaviors. One model claimed her ex-partner, already under restraining orders, stalked her and shared her content with family and friends, leading to distress and harassment. Many creators experience invasive attempts to control their lives through the content they share, which can put their safety at serious risk.

The investigation highlights the fact the platform, which boasts intimate and personal content, is not just home to struggling models but also vulnerable individuals at risk of exploitation. It is suggested close to 90% of OnlyFans creators earn just hundreds of pounds monthly, far removed from the sensational success stories of the few creators earning six-figure incomes. Some turn to the service out of necessity, placing themselves and their privacy on the line.

For many women, the desperate bid for financial relief can lead to dire situations. Professor Elena Martellozzo from the Centre for Child Abuse and Trauma Studies at Middlesex University commented, "Platforms like OnlyFans can create an environment for exploitation. We hear success stories of creators earning thousands of pounds, but the reality is far more complex. Many individuals—often in vulnerable situations—are drawn to the platform...hoping for financial stability. This can lead to situations where financial need turns dangerously exploitable.”

The tension is palpable, and the balance between opportunity and safety appears perilous for numerous creators. The exploitation prevalent on platforms like OnlyFans brings to light the challenges faced routinely by those who seek to monetize their personal lives through digital outlets. One woman from South Wales recounted how her ex-partner threatened her and controversially shared explicit images on the platform without her consent, adding to the distress many creators experience when their privacy is violated.

Despite these serious issues, OnlyFans co-founder and CEO Keily Blair insists they are dedicated to ensuring the safety of their users. "We moderate all of the content on our platform... We see everything. We’re doing it to keep our community safe," she told TEDx talk attendees earlier this year. Her claims suggest extensive oversight, yet the troubling stories from many creators raise questions about how effective this surveillance truly is.

Women on the site often take extreme measures to conceal their identities from the world. Many resort to disguising their appearances, altering backgrounds, or even choosing to restrict access to their content based on geographical location. Nevertheless, multiple cases exist involving the unsolicited dissemination of personal content to friends and family members, underscoring the battle many creators face against both anonymity and exploitation.

While the exposure can lead to financial rewards, there’s no question the toll on mental and emotional well-being can be substantial. The relentless chase for success through higher subscriber counts can create overwhelming pressure to engage in increasingly explicit content to satisfy demands. Martellozzo explained, "This feeds the 'more is more' mentality... The highly competitive nature of the platform creates this unhealthy pressure.”

OnlyFans has undoubtedly disrupted the dynamics of traditional entertainment and income, allowing individuals to sidestep conventional industries. Yet as this platform experiences significant growth, stories like Taylor Ryan's offer chilling reminders of the stark reality lurking behind the glamorized façade of financial independence, particularly for women.
