Omroep West has received recognition at the Regiohelden Awards 2024, celebrated for its contribution to regional journalism. The awards, presented on March 13, 2025, during the Regiohelden Festival held in Rotterdam, honor outstanding productions from regional public broadcasters.
The Regiohelden Awards, organized by the RPO, or collaboration and coordination organization of regional public broadcasters, feature multiple categories aimed at recognizing excellence and diversity within regional media. This year, notable wins included Omroep West's podcast series, 'De Supermarktmoord', which captured attention with its powerful storytelling surrounding the tragic murder of an employee at the Albert Heijn supermarket on the Turfmarkt, The Hague.
Jamel L., the perpetrator of the crime, was already known to police for prior offenses, leading the podcast team, consisting of journalists Chris van Dijk and Liza Janson, to investigate the systemic failures surrounding his freedom. "This local subject is also very relevant nationally," the jury noted, emphasizing the broader societal questions raised by the case. Omroep West's win for 'De Luistervink' category, awarded for the best audio production, highlights the commitment to tackling pressing issues through media.
Another major winner at the ceremony was RTV Noord, whose documentary series 'Achter de poort' took home the coveted Gouden Regiohelden Award for 2024. The series provided viewers with unprecedented access inside the asylum center at Ter Apel, with jury member comments acknowledging, "Martijn Klungel is the only journalist who was allowed to film behind the closed doors of the registration center." This access gave the series a unique perspective on challenges facing asylum seekers, mirroring broader societal concerns.
During this year's festival, the jury evaluated 73 entries from 13 regional public broadcasters. These entries spanned across diverse categories, showcasing compelling narratives and significant stories relevant to their communities. The jury expressed satisfaction with increased diversity among the stories presented, indicating progress from previous years. This development was seen as not only beneficial for regional journalism but also reflective of the society we live in.
Among the other award recipients was Omroep Gelderland, which won the De Nieuwsjager award for its thorough investigation entitled 'Soap Vitesse'. This piece uncovered the financial struggles of the venerable Arnhem football club, with the jury praising the relentless commitment shown by sport reporters Richard van der Made and Jan Sommerdijk. "The makers were on top of the news as if they were covering a football match," the jury remarked, highlighting their diligent yet dynamic approach to journalism.
RTV Drenthe was also honored with the award for the best video production, De Beeldvanger, for its short series 'Het dorp oet'. According to the jury, “This fun, short series has a powerful start and provides a beautiful picture of culture in the countryside.” By focusing on simple yet evocative themes, the program showcased how cultural milestones significantly contribute to regional identity.
Rijnmond saw Denise Bouwmeester recognized as the best new talent, capturing the De Nieuwkomer award for her innovative leadership of the online editorial team. The jury reflected on her impressive ability to connect with her audience at such a young age, stating, "Denise carries out a vision and brings her team along," noting her potential to make significant changes within her organization.
Meanwhile, Omroep Zeeland was awarded the De Verbinder award for its project 'Groter dan je denkt', which has effectively worked to create connections within the community. The jury commended presenter Bram Mvambanu for his unique ability to engage with interview subjects, noting, "Presenter Bram Mvambanu asks questions other journalists do not ask," which allows for powerful dialogues and connections.
This year’s Regiohelden Festival was not just about awarding excellence but was also seen as a celebration of the role of regional broadcasters as cultural custodians and connectors within society. The event highlighted the importance of journalists who work tirelessly to produce content reflecting the diversity of their communities.
The Regiohelden Awards stand out as not just accolades but as reminders of the significance of regional journalism. Each winner, with their unique contributions, demonstrates the pressing need for storytelling as both a reflection and driver of societal change. The emphasis on local narratives within the geopolitical sphere is becoming increasingly valuable for the public discourse.
