Officer Allan Reddins Killed During Bank Shootout

Tragic shooting marks first line-of-duty death for Oak Park Police since 1938

On the morning of November 29, 2024, tragedy struck the Oak Park Police Department as Detective Allan Reddins, 40, was fatally shot during what began as a routine response to a report of suspicious activity at a local bank. The incident unfolded around 9:30 AM when authorities received calls about a man exiting the Chase Bank located on Lake Street with what appeared to be a gun. Reddins, who joined the Oak Park force in May 2019, was known as a devoted police officer and family man. His death marks the first line-of-duty fatality the department has faced since 1938.

Detective Reddins swiftly responded to the scene and, together with fellow officers, confronted the suspect, who allegedly brandished the gun when instructed to show his hands. According to police reports, Reddins was shot once on his left side before officers returned fire, wounding the suspect, who was later apprehended and transported to Loyola University Medical Center.

Despite immediate medical attention, Reddins succumbed to his injuries at 10:10 AM, just minutes after arriving at the hospital. His passing has sent shockwaves throughout the Oak Park community and the broader law enforcement circle, prompting an outpouring of condolences from various officials, including Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and the Chicago Police Department.

Governor Pritzker extended his heartfelt sympathies, stating, "Oak Park Police Detective Allan Reddins lost his life in the line of duty. Our hearts are with his family, loved ones, and the Oak Park Police Department as we all grieve the loss of this dedicated officer. May his memory be a blessing." The Chicago Police echoed these sentiments, emphasizing solidarity among the law enforcement community during this trying time.

Notably, Reddins leaves behind his 19-year-old son, as well as other family members who are now left to navigate their grief. Oak Park Police Chief Shatonya Johnson, who personally oversaw Reddins' hiring, described him as "a natural-born leader, devoted father," whose contributions to the department were invaluable. She added, "I quickly identified his talent as something we needed here and looked forward to his future with us, believing he would soon move up the ranks with his dedication to law enforcement. It is heartbreaking to lose someone like him to senseless violence."

The events of the incident left not only family and colleagues mourning but also reverberated through the community. Residents reported hearing gunshots and witnessing the intense police presence afterward, which left many shaken. Eyewitness accounts indicated panic spread as individuals sought to understand what had transpired; one witness described rushing to shelter as they heard the initial shots ring out at the library nearby.

A community resident, Nicholas Gradishar, recounted his experience: "I get down after I hear the shots and then I come to the library to see it littered with cops. I saw police take the suspect who had been shot, checking his pockets before putting him on the ground. It’s shocking because nothing like this happens here. You might hear of fights occasionally, but nothing like this.”

The suspect, identified but not yet named publicly, was found with multiple firearms, raising concerns about how prepared he was for the confrontation. Although the authorities have not disclosed which weapon was used during the attack, they confirmed he remains stable and continues to receive treatment at the hospital.

Further investigation is underway, with the Oak Park Police Department leading the inquiry. Chief Johnson mentioned the possibility of body camera footage yet has not confirmed whether the events were captured on video. The department encourages anyone with information to come forward and assist with the investigation.

Following the shooting, local businesses, including stores near the incident, experienced disruptions, with some temporarily closing due to safety protocols. This event has sparked conversations about police safety and the challenges officers face daily, particularly during busy times like the holiday season.

Expressing condolences, various city officials shared their grief over the loss of Reddins, acknowledging his commitment to keeping the Oak Park community safe. “This incident has affected all of us deeply as we mourn not only the loss of Detective Reddins but also the reminder of the risks our police officers take every day to serve and protect,” noted Oak Park Mayor Vicki Scaman.

Police unions and organizations across the region are also voicing support for the Oak Park community, emphasizing the importance of honoring fallen officers and their families. They are working to lend assistance and offer resources during this painful time to help Reddins’ family as they navigate this monumental loss.

While Reddins’ death is now part of the tragic statistics involving police fatalities, his legacy and the impact of his service on the Oak Park community will likely remain long after this incident. The community holds the memory of Detective Allan Reddins as one focused on duty and caring for others—a tribute to the commitment of those who serve.

Funeral arrangements for Detective Reddins will be announced on the Oak Park village website as officials and the community come together to honor his sacrifice. The investigation continues, with all eyes now focused on how this tragedy will reflect on police initiatives and community safety measures going forward.
