Vito The Pug Makes History At National Dog Show

Chapel Hill Pug Claims Top Prize for First Time Since 2002

Vito, the spirited pug from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, has made history by winning the coveted Best in Show title at the 2024 National Dog Show, marking the first time his breed has claimed this top award since the show began airing on television back in 2002.

The annual spectacle, hosted by the Kennel Club of Philadelphia, took place on Thanksgiving Day and attracted over 1,900 dogs from more than 200 breeds and varieties. Vito, with his delightful personality and compact build, stood out among six other finalists, impressing judge George Milutinovich with his "beautiful expression and movement." Milutinovich noted, "Lots of dog in a small package," when describing what makes Vito remarkable.

When the moment of victory arrived, Vito craned his neck to look up at his handler, Michael Scott, seemingly trying to grasp the excitement swirling around him. Scott, who described Vito as "smug," humorously speculated, "I think he knows" about his triumph. Vito's win was not merely personal but also significant for fans of the pug breed, as it has been nearly two decades since one last took home this prestigious award.

Vito was crowned Best of Breed earlier this year at the Westminster Dog Show, solidifying his status as the No. 1 pug across all show systems and the No. 2-ranked toy dog overall. His owner, Carolyn Koch, has had considerable success in the dog show circuit since 1992, with previous winners as part of her pack, including other pugs and various breeds. Vito's latest accomplishment enriched her illustrious history with dogs, as he celebrated this win with pride.

During the National Dog Show, Vito competed against other exemplary canines, including Houston, the Clumber Spaniel, and Rupert, the Berger Picard, among others. Each contestant dazzled not just with their pedigree but with charm and grace. But Vito's unique character and stature captured the hearts of fans and judges alike, reflecting the pug's longstanding reputation as both playful companions and exemplary show dogs.

Since its initiation, the National Dog Show has developed from its origins back in 1879 to becoming a beloved televised event, with over 20 million viewers tuning in every year. The show is now considered as much of a Thanksgiving tradition as turkey and pumpkin pie. The event’s popularity skyrocketed after it was integrated with the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade broadcast, featuring segments showcasing various breeds and their backgrounds.

This year also saw the debut of the Lancashire Heeler, which has been added to the American Kennel Club’s list of recognized breeds and showcased among the competition's vibrant lineup. Participants ranging from established breeds to the new entrants added depth and diversity to the show.

With Vito taking the top honors, pet lovers and pug enthusiasts alike celebrated this achievement, showcasing their affection for the breed which has been cherished through history, once favored by Chinese emperors. Pugs, according to the American Kennel Club, are known for their love and companionship, embodying the motto "live to love and to be loved." This spirit was evident on the day of the show as Vito embodied the pug ethos of joy and endearment.

After his triumphant win, Vito was awarded a prize package valued at $2,000, which went to his proud owner. Vito now joins the ranks of canine royalty, with his legacy sure to inspire future generations of pugs and their passionate owners.

For those who missed the live broadcast, the National Dog Show is available to stream on platforms like Peacock, including highlights from previous years, allowing fans to relive the most memorable moments. Vito's story is one of determination, pride, and triumph, and his win will be talked about for years to come, inspiring other breeds and their handlers to strive for greatness.
