Nvidia Unveils RTX 50 Series GPUs With Advanced Features

The new RTX 5090 promises up to double the performance of its predecessor, setting new standards for gaming graphics.

Nvidia has officially rolled out its much-anticipated RTX 50 series of graphics processing units (GPUs) during the CES 2025 keynote, showcasing significant technological advancements aimed at gamers and creative professionals.

The RTX 5090, the flagship of the new series, is set to launch on January 30, 2025, at a price point of $1,999. Alongside it, the RTX 5080 will retail for $999, the RTX 5070 Ti for $749, and the RTX 5070 at $549. This strategic pricing embodies Nvidia's approach to make cutting-edge technology more accessible across various market segments.

CEO Jensen Huang emphasized the technological strides incorporated within the RTX 5090, stating, "The RTX 5090 is poised to deliver performance up to twice of the RTX 4090, aided by DLSS 4 technology." This statement positions the GPU not only as a direct competitor to its predecessor, the RTX 4090, which launched back on October 12, 2022, priced at $1,599, but also as the new standard for high-end graphics performance.

Equipped with 21,760 CUDA cores and 32GB of ultra-fast GDDR7 memory, the RTX 5090 showcases remarkable enhancements over the RTX 4090's 16,384 cores and 24GB of GDDR6X memory. The architecture transition to Blackwell allows it to reach memory bandwidths of up to 1,792 GB/s, significantly outperforming the 1,008 GB/s achievable by the RTX 4090. Such improvements are set to deliver unparalleled gaming performance, particularly at 4K and 8K resolutions.

Further reinforcing Nvidia's commitment to immersive gaming experiences are the new DLSS 4 and Multi Frame Generation technologies. Huang noted, "Our GPUs will generate up to three frames for every real frame," signaling substantial upgrades for executing high-resolution graphics with reduced latency and improved frame rates. This technology dramatically enhances the visual output of demanding titles like Cyberpunk 2077, where early demonstrations showcased the RTX 5090 achieving 238 fps with full ray tracing.

The RTX 5080 and lower-tier models, including the RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5070, also highlight Nvidia's breadth of offerings. The RTX 5080 is expected to deftly balance performance and cost with 10,752 CUDA cores and 16GB of GDDR7 memory, making it suitable for gamers seeking high-end specifications without exorbitant expenditures.

While the 5070 Ti and 5070 models cater to more budget-conscious consumers, they still promise significant performance boosts over their predecessors. Both GPUs will utilize GDDR7 memory, with the 5070 offering 12GB and 6,144 CUDA cores, marking Nvidia’s continued focus on value-driven performance.

Nvidia has ambitious plans to extend the capabilities of the RTX 50 series beyond desktop setups, targeting the laptop market with models equipped with varying memory configurations to provide gamers with high-performance options on the go. Huang mentioned the expected slim profiles of laptops housing these new GPUs; for example, RTX 5090 laptops will start at $2,899, reflecting the dual utility of performance and efficiency enabled by advanced cooling systems and AI integration.
