Noël Claims Season Opener At Levi With Dominant Slalom Victory

Olympic champion breaks drought with thrilling performance as rivals falter on the iconic slopes

LEVI, Finland — The pristine slopes of Levi, Finland witnessed joy and triumph as Olympic champion Clément Noël charged through the gates, dominating the season’s first men’s World Cup slalom on November 17, 2024. It marked the French skier's first victory since January 2023, ending his 22-month drought. Noël's performance was both thrilling and inspiring, sealing his 11th World Cup win with sheer skill and determination.

Starting strong, Noël's first run put him just 0.02 seconds ahead of Switzerland's Loïc Meillard, setting the stage for what would become a nail-biting finale. Known for maintaining his composure under pressure, Noël didn’t falter as he skillfully navigated through the challenging slalom course, allowing him to finish the second run dramatically faster than all competitors, securing victory by 0.80 seconds over Norwegian rival Henrik Kristoffersen, who surged from 10th to 2nd during the afternoon session. Meillard rounded out the podium, claiming third position after consistently finishing among the top skiers.

Reflecting on his win, Noël said, “The second run was way more enjoyable.” Expressing gratitude toward the fans supporting him throughout the event, he emphasized the importance of this early victory for building momentum throughout the season. "The beginning of the season is always really important to build confidence for the rest," he remarked, encapsulating the spirit of the day.

Notably absent from the second run was Marcel Hirscher, the celebrated Austrian skier and record eight-time overall champion. Hirscher, upon returning from retirement, could not qualify for the second heat, finishing the first run split over 2.5 seconds behind Noël’s initial time. Though he expressed excitement about racing again, the icy conditions proved rough after five years away, leaving him contemplating the challenges of his comeback.

Among the exciting narratives of the day was Brazil’s Lucas Pinheiro Braathen, achieving his best-ever finish since returning to World Cup racing by placing fourth. Braathen, who is among the few racers representing Brazil on the Alpine circuit, said, “To be able to go back-to-back on top results is such a relief,” confirming his readiness to challenge the elite of Alpine skiing again.

The Levi slopes added to the tension as Kristoffersen applied relentless pressure, showcasing remarkable speed during his second run. With numerous lead changes throughout the day, every skater brought their best to the course, captivating fans and competitors alike. The thrill of slalom racing kept the crowd on edge, as they awaited the outcomes of each swift descent.

Noël's successful run meant he turned the tables from the last World Cup held on these slopes, where Kristoffersen had bested him. This victory not only boosts Noël’s confidence but sets the tone for the rest of the season. He confirmed his technical proficiency at the event with smooth transitions, particularly through the steep sections of the course where others struggled.

Viewers worldwide tuned in to observe exhilarating moments as the men's slalom field showcased raw talent, resilience, and preparation coming together. With the next slalom taking place at Gurgl, Austria, the competition intensifies as athletes continue to gear up for victory.
