Nintendo Unveils Switch 2 With 120fps Support

The new console promises enhanced gameplay and exclusive titles for fans.

Nintendo has officially unveiled its much-anticipated console, the Switch 2, during the Switch 2 Direct presentation held on April 2, 2025. Among the exciting new features, the console will support framerates of up to 120fps, a significant upgrade from the original Nintendo Switch, which was limited to 60fps. This enhancement is expected to elevate the gaming experience, particularly for popular franchises like Mario Kart and Splatoon, which will benefit from smoother gameplay.

During the presentation, Nintendo showcased how the 120fps capability will enhance gameplay, using 2D Mario as a prime example. However, it is important to note that this high framerate will only apply to select games, and not all titles will be able to utilize the new feature. While some games may still be limited to 30 or 60fps, fans can reasonably expect that Nintendo will implement this upgrade in its most popular titles.

In addition to the impressive framerate, the handheld LCD screen of the Switch 2 will be capable of 120fps. However, for those who prefer gaming on a larger screen while docked, achieving these framerates will depend on whether the connected TV supports it. Nintendo has also confirmed that the new console will feature a 1080p screen and support for 4K resolution for compatible games when docked.

Storage capacity has also seen a significant boost, with the Switch 2 set to come with 256GB of internal storage—eight times that of the original Switch. This expansion in storage is a welcome addition for gamers eager to download and store their favorite titles.

As if that wasn’t enough to excite fans, the Direct also revealed a surprise announcement from FromSoftware: a brand-new title called The Duskbloods. This game, which is exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2, is set to launch in 2026 and will cater to up to eight players online. Directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, known for his work on critically acclaimed titles like Bloodborne and Elden Ring, The Duskbloods promises to deliver a multiplayer-centric experience that fans of the genre will be eager to explore.

The reveal trailer hints at a dark and immersive world reminiscent of FromSoftware's previous works, leaving fans buzzing with anticipation. The YouTube description for the game teased, "The moontears will flow for one and one alone when The Duskbloods, a brand-new multiplayer game by FromSoftware, is coming exclusively to Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026." This exclusivity mirrors previous partnerships between the developer and other consoles, much like the exclusive experiences seen with Bloodborne on PS4.

With these significant announcements, the Nintendo Switch 2 is shaping up to be a formidable competitor against other gaming consoles such as the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. The combination of enhanced performance, exclusive titles, and a robust library of games is likely to attract both existing Nintendo fans and newcomers alike.

As the launch date for the Nintendo Switch 2 approaches, set for June 5, 2025, excitement continues to build within the gaming community. The prospect of playing beloved franchises at higher framerates and the introduction of new IPs like The Duskbloods has many gamers eagerly anticipating the next generation of Nintendo gaming.

Overall, the Switch 2 Direct has provided a glimpse into the future of gaming on Nintendo’s latest console, showcasing impressive technical advancements and exclusive offerings that promise to redefine the gaming experience for fans around the world. With the Switch 2, Nintendo appears ready to take on its competitors and deliver innovative gameplay that will delight audiences for years to come.
