Niki Prasad To Lead India’s U19 Women’s Team At T20 World Cup

After winning the U19 Asia Cup, India aims to defend their title with confidence and momentum built from recent successes.

Niki Prasad has been appointed to lead India’s U19 women's cricket team at the upcoming T20 World Cup set to be held in Malaysia from January 18 to February 2, 2025. This announcement follows India's stellar performance at the inaugural U19 Women’s Asia Cup, where they clinched the trophy under her leadership.

After lifting the Asia Cup trophy recently, Prasad expressed her excitement about taking on this new role. "We are happy and proud... even in Malaysia, there were Indian fans who came and watched the matches and supported us," she said. Her leadership has already proven successful, as she guided the team to victory over Bangladesh in the Asia Cup final.

With the squad composed mainly of players from the Asia Cup-winning team, India aims to retain their title as reigning champions from the last World Cup, held in South Africa in 2023. Prasad's promotion from Asia Cup captain to World Cup captain highlights her rapid ascent and the confidence selectors have in her abilities.

The final squad includes 15 players, with Prasad leading and Sanika Chalke as her deputy. Notable players like Kamalini G and Bhavika Ahire are designated as wicketkeepers. Vaishnavi S earned her spot on the main roster after strong performances, replacing Nandhana S, who has moved to reserves.

The tournament format sees four groups of four teams competing. India is placed in Group A, where they will face hosts Malaysia, the West Indies, and Sri Lanka. The group stages will take place at Bayuemas Oval, the same venue where India recently showcased their prowess during the Asia Cup.

When asked about her team’s chances, Prasad reflected, "I think the best day would be today (December 24)... I want to win the trophy," signaling her commitment to team success.

The competition will follow up with Super Six rounds, where teams will carry forward their points and net run rate from the group stages, with the top two from each Super Six group advancing to the semifinals on January 31, 2025. The grand finale will conclude the tournament on February 2, 2025.

Prasad has experienced intense moments during the Asia Cup, particularly during tight matches, and indicated her team’s growing confidence stemming from their success. Despite the pressure of being the defending champions, she mentioned, "I feel all of us are really excited... we are motivated to give our best."

Looking to the future, Prasad also acknowledged the advantage her team holds, having spent time getting familiar with the Malaysian conditions. This experience undoubtedly provides India with insights to navigate the tournament successfully.

Overall, anticipation is high for the U19 Women’s T20 World Cup as Prasad and her squad prepare to showcase their talents and aim for another title under their belt.
