Costco Eggs Recalled Amid Salmonella Fears

FDA warns of potential serious health risks from contaminated Kirkland eggs sold nationwide.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a grave warning about thousands of recalled eggs sold at Costco due to potential contamination with salmonella, prompting the recall to be escalated to the FDA’s highest risk level, Class I. This alert came just days before Christmas and signifies serious health concerns related to food safety.

On December 20, the FDA announced its upgraded classification, indicating there is now a reasonable likelihood of severe health issues, or even fatalities, connected to the consumption of the contaminated eggs. The eggs involved come from the New York-based Handsome Brook Farms, which issued the voluntary recall on November 27, 2024, for over 10,000 cases of its Kirkland Signature brand organic, pasture-raised eggs.

According to Handsome Brook Farms, the recall was necessitated after it was discovered eggs not meant for retail distribution were inadvertently packaged and shipped to stores. This initial mishap has led to significant concerns about public health safety. A total of 10,800 cases—each containing 24 eggs—are affected, with the eggs having been distributed to 25 Costco locations across Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee, starting from November 22.

The FDA’s alert defined Class I recalls as situations where consuming or being exposed to the affected products could likely result in serious adverse health consequences or death. The egg cartons involved have the UPC 9661910680 and are marked with the Julian code 327, with usage by dates set for January 5, 2025.

While no illnesses have yet been reported as linked to this recall, health regulators are advising consumers to dispose of any recalled eggs immediately or return them to their local Costco store for full refunds. Salmonella, the bacteria responsible for these concerns, is the leading cause of food-borne illness across the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), salmonella leads to approximately 1.35 million infections each year, resulting in 26,500 hospitalizations and 420 deaths annually.

Common symptoms of salmonella infection include fever, diarrhea, and stomach cramps, with the illness typically lasting up to a week. While many recover without treatment, certain demographics are more susceptible to severe illness, particularly children under five, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems. The CDC warns consumers to seek medical attention if they experience symptoms such as fever higher than 102 degrees or prolonged diarrhea.

The gravity of this recall serves as a stark reminder of the importance of stringent food safety measures within the supply chain. Handsome Brook Farms stated their commitment to improving practices to prevent recurrences, announcing, “Additional supply chain controls and retraining are being put in place to prevent recurrence.”

Consumers who may possess these recalled eggs are urged to check their cartons for identifying codes and dates. The CDC also stresses the necessity of proper food handling and hygiene practices to mitigate risks of foodborne illness.

The escalation of this recall to Class I highlights the potential dangers lurking even within everyday food products, demonstrating the need for both vigilance among consumers and accountability within the food industry. Therefore, those affected should prioritize their health and return any recalled products to their respective stores, as precautionary measures can safeguard one's health and well-being.
