On April 3, 2025, Niigata University held its entrance ceremony at the Toki Messe in Niigata City Chuo Ward, welcoming a total of 3,274 new students who are set to embark on their academic journeys. The event marked a significant milestone for these students, as they stepped into a new chapter in their lives filled with dreams and aspirations.

President Tatsuo Ushiki addressed the gathered students, emphasizing the importance of science and education in shaping the future. He stated, "Science and learning have the power to increase the accuracy of predicting the future and enrich us. Study at Niigata University..." This message resonated with the new students, many of whom are eager to make their mark in various fields.

The ceremony was a vibrant affair, with students dressed in new suits, filled with excitement for what lies ahead. As they gathered, the atmosphere was charged with anticipation. The university welcomed students from ten different faculties and graduate schools, reflecting a diverse array of academic interests and career goals.

Among the new students was Yuta Kumagai, a representative from the Faculty of Dentistry. He delivered a heartfelt speech, expressing his hopes for his fellow students. "I wish that all of us here can work together, sharpen each other, and grow together towards our respective goals," he said. This sentiment encapsulated the spirit of collaboration and mutual support that many students hope to cultivate during their time at the university.

The new students come from various backgrounds, each with unique aspirations. One student shared their ambition of becoming a public health nurse, stating, "I want to contribute to the community as a health worker." Parents in attendance expressed their pride and hopes for their children, encouraging them to work diligently towards their dreams.

Some students are particularly excited about participating in extracurricular activities. One new student mentioned plans to join the volleyball club to enhance their skills, while another expressed a desire to obtain a teaching license, saying, "I entered Niigata University to become a teacher, so I want to work hard to achieve that goal." These aspirations highlight the multifaceted nature of university life, where academics and personal development go hand in hand.

However, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic continues to linger for some students. A new graduate student reflected on their experience of not being able to attend classes in person during their undergraduate years, stating, "I started going to university in my second year. I want to make up for the time lost due to COVID and work hard now." This acknowledgment of the challenges faced during the pandemic adds a layer of resilience to the students' narratives as they move forward.

As the ceremony concluded, President Ushiki reiterated his hopes for the new students, wishing them a fulfilling and enriching student life. He encouraged them to cherish the various encounters they would have during their time at the university, fostering relationships that could last a lifetime.

The academic year officially begins on April 8, 2025, when classes will commence.
