NHK's 'Werarou' Set To Redefine Taiga Drama

With bold narratives and engaging characters, the new series promises to captivate modern audiences.

NHK is set to launch its latest Taiga drama, ‘Werarou’ (べらぼう), which has already generated significant buzz thanks to its innovative approach to storytelling and the dynamic performances of its lead actors. This drama marks the first lead role for Yokohama Ryusei, who confidently calls it the beginning of ‘a new genre of Taiga drama.’

Yokohama plays the historical figure Tsutaju Juuzaburo, known as the media king of Edo, and he expressed his enthusiasm about stepping onto this unique platform. He described the project as distinct from traditional Taiga dramas, which often focus on battle scenes, stating, “Although there are no battles, I can confidently say we have completed a new genre of Taiga.” This creative direction aims to encapsulate the business aspect of life during the Edo period, differing greatly from standard representations.

A year-long filming process is underway, and Yokohama, who has experience portraying characters over extended periods (like his role in 'Ressha Sentai Tokkyuger' from 2014 to 2015), feels prepared for the challenge. He remarked on the nostalgic connection to his character, saying, “I feel a sense of connection with wearing the green kimono, reminiscent of my transformation color from back then. It brings me back to my roots and strengthens my resolve.”

Ayase Haruka, another major player alongside Yokohama, also adds to the excitement surrounding ‘Werarou.’ Appearing as Kunisuke, she revealed insights about her character and her role. On the 5th, she made waves on NHK's official X (formerly Twitter) channel, sharing some behind-the-scenes details. Ayase acts as the narrator and offers her take on various scenes, particularly focusing on the historical district of Yoshiwara.

Her character is quite the fusion, intertwining aspects of both courtesans and fox spirits. She elaborated on the complexity of her role, stating, “There were numerous tests and playful additions to create my character. It has been really interesting work.” The character’s whimsical nature is mirrored through Ayase’s portrayal, even playfully flaunting her costume, which included elements of fox tails, prompting lots of charming comments from her fans online.

Fans are eagerly awaiting the premiere, showing excitement particularly after Ayase's fun video. Comments flooded the platform with praise for her as she blended traditional garb with modern technology by displaying maps using her smartphone. One follower wrote, “That smartphone explanation was absolutely hilarious!” Another remarked, “Her character being both cute and strange is simply perfect! I can't wait to see it.”

With such vibrant portrayals and the promise of fresh storytelling techniques, ‘Werarou’ is anticipated to not only capture historical intricacies but also engage contemporary audiences. The creative team aims to break the conventional mold, perhaps winning over not just fans of historical dramas but also attracting younger viewers unfamiliar with the genre.

Such developments are indicative of the broader evolution of Taiga dramas within Japanese television. Traditionally revered for their narratives involving samurai and significant battles, these dramas are now exploring themes relevant to business and personal endeavors during the Edo period, as demonstrated by ‘Werarou.’

The combined efforts of actors like Yokohama and Ayase signify NHK’s attempt to reimagine historical storytelling. This drama could resonate more deeply with today’s audiences as it reflects on life’s narrative beyond the battlefield, shedding light on the entrepreneurial spirit of the past. It also challenges the perception of what Taiga dramas can encompass, pushing for diversity within storytelling forms.

‘Werarou’ positions itself at the forefront of this shift, aiming to delight audiences with its innovative blend of history and creativity. With the premiere drawing close, both the cast and the creative team express immense anticipation for viewers’ reactions, eager to show how they’ve breathed new life and relevance back to this iconic genre.
