NFL Teams With Vet The Vote To Honor Veterans And Poll Workers

A special PSA during Monday Night Football highlights the role of veterans as poll workers on Election Day

The National Football League (NFL) has teamed up with Vet the Vote, a nonprofit organization led by veterans and military families, to honor poll workers and veterans with the release of their public service announcement (PSA) during one of America's favorite sporting events, Monday Night Football.

This initiative shines light on the significant role veterans play within their communities, particularly when it’s time to cast votes. Aiming to recruit veterans and military families, Vet the Vote is committed to staffing polling locations nationwide. The PSA is scheduled to air during ESPN's "Monday Night Football Kickoff" at 7:30 PM on Election Day eve, November 4th.

Scott Pioli, three-time Super Bowl champion and current NFL executive, narrates the PSA, which not only expresses gratitude to those who served but also emphasizes the importance of civic engagement. He states, "We at the NFL are proud supporters of Vet the Vote, a coalition which has recruited over 162,000 veterans and military family members to serve their country again, this time as poll workers. We thank these special volunteers for their service – twice." This partnership is part of the NFL's broader commitment to supporting military families and improving democracy.

Vet the Vote, which includes over 40 veteran and civic organizations, has seen incredible growth since its inception. The campaign's volunteers have more than doubled its recruitment numbers compared to the previous midterm elections, reflecting increased engagement and commitment from veterans and their families. The efforts have resulted in over 163,000 veterans, military members, and their families pledging to help on November 5th, the date of the next national election.

"Monday, Nov. 4 is also Election Hero Day," Vet the Vote remarked, noting this celebration recognizes the hard work and contributions of election officials, staff, and poll workers who make the electoral process accessible, fair, and secure for everyone. Such events serve as reminders of the importance of local involvement and dedicated service.

According to the Election Assistance Commission (EAC), there has been a growing concern over the shortage of qualified poll workers across the country. The agency reports difficulties faced by jurisdictions, as many have stated it is "very difficult" or "somewhat difficult" to recruit staff for elections. The PSA aims to address this shortage by not only honoring those currently serving as poll workers but also encouraging more veterans to take on this important role.

With increasing numbers of veterans stepping up to serve as poll workers, the push aims to highlight their value. According to Vet the Vote, the organization believes veterans can contribute significantly to upholding democratic processes, ensuring elections are fair and transparent.

This collaboration with the NFL is not just about recruitment; it's also about showcasing the shared values between the sports community and veteran organizations. The intersection of sports and community service provides platforms to advocate for important societal issues.

Overall, this PSA serves as both acknowledgment and encouragement for veterans to participate in the electoral process, including stepping up as poll workers. It's a chance for them to continue serving their country, albeit now, through civic engagement. Pioli's words resonate deeply, celebrating their dual commitment to service: "These volunteers are key to keeping our democracy running smoothly, ensuring every vote counts. It is our duty to honor them, and we are proud to be part of this important initiative."

With just days until the election, the NFL's partnership with Vet the Vote highlights the importance of volunteerism and civic duty, offering veterans the opportunity to play their part once more, ensuring democracy thrives at the local level.
