New York Jets Target Chiefs' Mike Borgonzi For GM Position

The Jets are actively seeking leadership changes after another disappointing season.

The New York Jets are making headlines as they begin their search for a new general manager, targeting Mike Borgonzi, the assistant general manager of the Kansas City Chiefs, as their top candidate. This decision follows the Jets' disappointing 5-12 season, which marked their continued struggle to make the playoffs since 2010.

During the past NFL season, the Jets had high hopes but found themselves facing yet another disappointing outcome. Owner Woody Johnson is committed to changing the direction of the franchise and is seeking strong leadership through this significant hiring process. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Jets submitted the interview request to discuss the position with Borgonzi, who has been widely recognized for his contributions to the Chiefs’ recent successes.

Borgonzi, currently serving as the Chiefs’ assistant GM, has spent 16 years with the organization. His career there began as a College Scouting Administrator back in 2009, where he gradually ascended through the ranks, receiving promotions to roles including Director of Football Operations and Assistant Director of Pro Scouting. He assumed his current role as assistant general manager in 2021. Notably, during his tenure, the Chiefs have experienced considerable success, including winning multiple AFC Championships and Super Bowl titles.

Given his extensive experience and strategic expertise, Borgonzi has emerged as one of the most sought-after candidates in this hiring season. The Jets' interest is indicative of their desire to revamp their front office and instill confidence among fans and stakeholders about the future direction of the team. Analyst Dianna Russini also reported the Jets are speaking with Chiefs’ offensive coordinator Matt Nagy for the head coaching position, showcasing their dual focus on both upper management and coaching.

The search for a general manager is particularly pressing for the Jets. With the organization historically struggling to find lasting success, whoever steps up to fill the role will have considerable responsibilities, including overseeing player acquisitions, managing the draft, and shaping the team's identity.

While the Jets have had several candidates on their radar, including former Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff and current Rams senior personnel executive Ray Farmer, Borgonzi stands out due to his successful history with the Chiefs—a franchise currently at the pinnacle of the NFL.

Notably, the future of star quarterback Aaron Rodgers hangs in the balance as the Jets navigate their leadership overhaul. Following the Jets' season-ending victory over the Miami Dolphins, Rodgers emphasized the need for clarity moving forward. He stated, "I'm gonna get home and relax... But I'm not going to hold anybody up. I'll have conversations tomorrow with the Jets to see what they're thinking." This uncertainty makes the general manager search all the more imperative, particularly with decisions around potential trades or contracts for key players looming.

Recent observations indicate if Rodgers were to leave, it could have ripple effects. For example, star wide receiver Davante Adams’s situation would come to the forefront. If the Jets decide to release Rodgers, they might explore parting ways with Adams, which would save them $36.3 million against the salary cap next year.

The Jets also have the No. 7 overall pick for the 2025 NFL Draft, presenting another challenge for their incoming general manager. While it’s not the prime position for landing elite quarterback prospects, the franchise will need to evaluate the options available and select the right player to bolster their ranks moving forward.

Despite the pressures of revamping the organization, there is optimism within the Jets' front office about securing talent. Borgonzi's skill set, particularly around drafting and personnel management, may facilitate significant progress for the franchise if chosen to lead. Past hiring cycles have shown Jets fans the transient nature of success, and the team is nonetheless determined to find long-term stability.

With discussions already underway, the upcoming weeks will be pivotal for the Jets as they look to finalize their general manager and coaching personnel. While the Jets explore their top choices, including potential conversations with the Chiefs, fans are hopeful for meaningful changes as the franchise seeks to break from its disheartening past.

For Jets followers, this season's closing chapter introduces excitement about the future. The fresh outlook provided by new leadership could be the catalyst needed to reinvigorate the team's efforts as they prepare to tackle the challenges of the 2025 NFL season and beyond.
