The vibrant culinary scene reflects a rich tapestry of cultures and influences, according to Time Out rankings.

The world’s best cities for food in 2025 have been ranked by Time Out, with New Orleans claiming the top spot. The Southern US city edged out global culinary giants like Paris and Madrid, thanks to its rich fusion of French, Spanish, Vietnamese, and African influences. Time Out surveyed more than 18,500 people about their city’s food scene, evaluating destinations based on affordability, quality, and diversity.

A panel of food experts, including chefs and writers, then weighed in to finalize the list. Grace Beard, Travel Editor at Time Out, said: “Food is the backbone of local culture in our cities and the reason many of us choose to travel.”

The rankings unveil a diverse global tapestry of flavors, showcasing cities where food is much more than sustenance; it's a cultural experience. New Orleans, with its culinary delights, has been recognized for its pole position, claiming the title of the best city for food in 2025.

Following New Orleans in the rankings is Bangkok, which has made a name for itself with its legendary street food scene. Affordable meals coexist side by side with Michelin-starred establishments, providing a rich culinary experience for locals and tourists alike. Cuisine staples like som tam, a green papaya salad, have become favorites among visitors.

In third place is Medellín, Colombia, celebrated for its vibrant and affordable gastronomical offerings. The city boasts a diverse array of dishes, including bandeja paisa platters and a variety of exquisite exotic fruits that tantalize the taste buds.

Meanwhile, Cape Town in South Africa is in fourth place, showcasing a fusion of Asian, European, and African influences. This rich blend is prominently displayed in local markets and restaurants, with visitors encouraged to experience the gourmet sensations on Bree Street, famously dubbed “Gourmet Boulevard.”

Spain's capital, Madrid, ranked fifth, is known for its innovative dining scene, where chefs often push culinary boundaries. Notable establishments like La Tasquería, a Michelin-starred restaurant, exemplify this trend of creativity.

Mexico City comes in sixth place, renowned for its diverse offerings from street vendors to fine dining restaurants. Diners can enjoy classic dishes such as tacos al pastor and torta de chilaquiles at famous dining spots like Quintonil and Pujol.

Seventh place went to Lagos, Nigeria, notable for its bold flavors and affordability. Street foods, including jollof rice and puff-puff, showcase the local culture’s vibrancy and should not be missed.

Shanghai, China, at eighth place, boasts a unique blend of history and modernity in its culinary landscape. Local favorites such as shengjianbao, crispy-bottomed dumplings filled with broth, captivate food enthusiasts.

Paris, France, despite its esteemed reputation, lands ninth in the rankings. The city offers a vibrant culinary scene where new restaurants constantly open, with an abundance of fine dining experiences awaiting those willing to splurge.

Finally, Jakarta, Indonesia, takes the tenth spot with a culinary landscape influenced by various cultures, offering outstanding street food and dining that caters to multiple tastes.
