New Drama 'Shiawase Wa Tabete Nete Mate' Premieres April 1

Yuki Sakurai stars as a woman navigating life changes and healing through food and community.

A new drama titled Shiawase wa Tabete Nete Mate, led by acclaimed actress Yuki Sakurai, is set to premiere on NHK General TV on April 1, 2025. The show, which will air every Tuesday at 10:00 PM, offers a heartfelt glimpse into the life of a 38-year-old woman trying to navigate the challenges thrown her way.

In this compelling narrative, Sakurai portrays Satoko Mugi, a single woman whose life dramatically changes after being diagnosed with adenomyosis, a condition that necessitates a complete reevaluation of her lifestyle. "I will meet a 'yakuzen' chef and through them, I will learn how to take care of my body through food. It means my life will gradually change," Sakurai shared, as the premise delves into themes of personal growth, health and the significance of cooking for healing.

In addition to Sakurai’s central role, the cast features notable performances from Mariko Kaga, who plays Suzu Miyama, Satoko's supportive landlady. Akiko Miyazaki stars as Tsukasa, the chef who introduces Satoko to the principles of 'yakuzen', leading her through a transformative experience rooted in medicinal cuisine. As the story unfolds, Satoko experiences a gradual return to health and self-acceptance, driven by her interactions with her neighbors and newfound friends.

The ensemble cast includes Kanji Furutachi, Tomoko Tabata, and Chizuru Ikewaki, along with others who inhabit the community surrounding Satoko. This varied ensemble portrays individuals from her new job at 'Tojyo Design', along with residents of the apartment complex who enrich her narrative. Characters like Ichiro Tojyo, played by Furutachi, and graphic designer Mashiko Hiroki, played by Hiroto Nakayama, represent her support system as she strives to rebuild her life.

Facing her limitations and the stigma around her health condition, Satoko also encounters deep-seated societal challenges. Among the residents in her new apartment, Riku Sakahashi, portrayed by Noriko Kita, symbolizes the struggle with food-related issues, while the quirky Yumi Mejiro, played by Hinano Nakayama, adds youthful energy as Satoko’s part-time rental customers.

This relatable and poignant storyline resonates with many—especially as it artfully depicts the manner in which relationships can foster healing. Satoko’s journey is a balance of self-discovery and communal support as she learns to enjoy life again. The show ultimately serves to highlight the importance of emotional and physical nourishment, intertwined within both cooking and community.

As anticipation builds, the drama promises to be more than mere entertainment; it’s expected to deliver powerful messages about resilience in the face of adversity, personal growth, and the fostering of health through food. The series will consist of 9 episodes, with rebroadcasts airing on Fridays at 0:35 AM, allowing viewers to experience or revisit this uplifting tale of transformation.

With its rich narrative woven through the everyday experiences of its characters, Shiawase wa Tabete Nete Mate sets the stage for a poignant exploration of life, love, and the healing power of food.
