New Deputy Regents Take Charge Amid Local Governance Changes

With proactive leadership, newly appointed deputy regents aim to reshape their local administrations and fulfill campaign promises.

Newly appointed deputy regents across Indonesia have quickly embraced their roles, focusing on governance and revitalizing local administration since their appointments. The significant political transitions have generated both anticipation and scrutiny among local bureaucracies and communities.

Following his inauguration at the Presidential Palace, Muhammad Rizal Oktavian, the Deputy Regent of Mojokerto, immediately delved deep within the local government structure. He acknowledged, "Monday, February 24, 2025, is not my first workday as Deputy Regent of Mojokerto." His duties began with the welcoming of notable figures, including the Chairman of the Election Commission and the Army Chief of Staff, General Maruli Simanjutak, during the weekend preceding his official start.

Rizal was tasked with coordinating activities and overseeing various local programs. He expressed his commitment to implement the vision and mission laid out during his campaign, which includes initiatives like increased teacher salaries and enhanced BPJS health coverage. He stated, "We hope to start implementing several programs, including house repairs and educational improvements, within our first 100 days of work."

Meanwhile, Abdul Hafiz, the newly appointed Deputy Regent of Kepahiang, took swift action on his very first day, immediately monitoring staff members and engaging with various offices. Dressed formally and equipped with his black cap, he raised some alarm among civil servants accustomed to more relaxed oversight. Approximately during his visit, he noted the absence of several officials, leading to concerns among those who had previously enjoyed leniency.

Expressing his views, Abdul Hafiz commented, "We can't necessarily stop civil servants from being out of the office, as long as they have valid reasons for their absence. Yet, visible negligence, like the litter around the offices, is unacceptable and needs to be corrected." His proactive stance indicates significant changes may be on the horizon for local governance.

Both deputy regents express the intention to establish order and accountability within their respective offices, enhancing the relationship between local administration and citizens. Rizal's initiatives aim at fulfilling promises made during the recent elections, whereas Abdul Hafiz’s approach focuses on immediate oversight, setting expectations for his staff.

Critiques from the public will likely surface as these newly appointed officials navigate their early days. The community's hopes are high for these leaders to invigorate administration efforts and address existing challenges. Both LOcal governments view the new deputy regents as agents of change, likely to carry weighty responsibilities as they move forward.

The simultaneous appointment of deputy regents across various regions showcases the government's push toward revitalizing local governance. Their actions will set the tone for efficient administration, laying groundwork for collaborative partnerships with residents and stakeholders.
