The USS Beloit, a littoral combat ship, was commissioned on November 23, 2024, at a ceremony held at the Milwaukee harbor. The event was particularly monumental, underscoring the achievements of Major General Marcia Anderson, who became the first Black woman to serve as the ship's sponsor. This role is traditionally reserved for individuals with notable connections to the ship's namesake, and according to the Secretary of the Navy, Carlos Del Toro, Anderson's personal ties to Beloit, Wisconsin, made her the perfect choice.
Anderson, who hails from Beloit, was recognized not only for her groundbreaking career but also for being the first Black woman to attain the rank of major general within the United States Army Reserve. Her promotion, which took place back in 2011, distinguished her as the highest-ranked African American woman at the time.
Attendees at the commissioning ceremony included state and local officials, Navy representatives, and community members, all gathering to celebrate this significant moment for both the ship and its sponsor. U.S. Representative Gwen Moore, who spoke at the ceremony, emphasized the deep-rooted connection between Anderson and Beloit, noting, “When I think about the role Beloit has played in the Navy, ... it created a strong, innovative workforce among women. I think it is totally appropriate to have our own General Marcia Anderson as the sponsor of this great ship.”
Commissioned as the 15th Freedom-variant littoral combat ship, the USS Beloit bears the name of the city itself as recognition of its contributions to the Navy. Beloit, with its rich maritime history, is noted for supporting various naval endeavors. The ship passed its rigorous acceptance trials earlier this August, indicating readiness for operational assignments.
“The USS Beloit is tested and battle-ready,” asserted U.S. Navy Cmdr. Jason Dejesus, the ship's executive officer. He expressed pride and excitement for the crew and the ship’s legacy, which they plan to uphold as they represent the maritime traditions of Beloit.
General Anderson's path to this significant moment was paved with numerous achievements after joining the Army through the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) at Creighton University. Commissioned as a second lieutenant upon her graduation, Anderson spent nearly four decades serving her country, accumulating numerous accolades such as the Army Distinguished Service Medal and the Army Commendation Medal.
During her career, Anderson not only focused on her military duties but also advocated for representation and opportunities for women within the Army. Her promotion and appointment reflect broader changes occurring across the military, embodying strides toward inclusivity and diversity. Anderson's achievements continue to inspire many aspiring service members.
Reflecting on her role as the ship’s sponsor, Anderson expressed gratitude and pride, saying, “It is truly humbling to have this honor. The USS Beloit will carry the spirit of our community and our commitment to service as it embarks on its missions.” Her words were met with applause, showcasing the pride felt within the community for both her and the ship.
The commissioning of the USS Beloit stands as both a tribute to the past contributions of Beloit to the naval community and the beginning of new missions for this state-of-the-art combat ship, helmed by dedicated service members ready to face future challenges together. With every launch and mission, Anderson’s connection to the ship will be felt, symbolizing unity, resilience, and excellence for everyone involved.
