New Bosch Spin-Off Ballard Set To Premiere This Summer

Maggie Q stars as LAPD Detective Renée Ballard in the upcoming series that explores cold cases and the legacy of Harry Bosch.

The case may be closed on Bosch: Legacy, but for Titus Welliver and Maggie Q, the story is just getting started. With the Prime Video spin-off Ballard arriving on May 29, 2025, fans of the franchise have a new mystery to delve into, despite the contentious cancellation of Legacy. The upcoming series will follow Maggie Q’s Renée Ballard as she tackles cold cases, departmental politics, and navigates the shadow of Harry Bosch himself.

In a recent interview with TV Insider, Welliver and Q reflected on the finale of Bosch: Legacy and teased what’s ahead in Ballard. Their first meeting may have been tense, but Ballard and Bosch quickly recognize something familiar in one another. “She was fully convinced that no one knew this case better than Harry Bosch,” Q said, referring to Ballard’s determination to solve a case Bosch had to walk away from. Welliver added, “They’re not dissimilar in their temperament and certainly their work ethic and their relentlessness. There’s mistrust there on both parts that exists.”

As the spinoff unfolds, it sets the stage for plenty of friction between the two characters. Renée, still in the LAPD, and Bosch, now a private investigator, don’t exactly share a playbook. “They butt heads because she wants him to do it by the book,” Q explained. “She’s a stickler for rules. But there’s also a bigger picture here: What do we want to achieve together?” Welliver agreed, noting, “There’s a stubborn, dogged part of Harry that has him work around things, which Ballard can’t afford to do. But ultimately, they’re in agreement to be allies.”

The show will also shift how the franchise looks and feels. Gone are Bosch’s dimly lit investigations—this is a Malibu-based story with a very different visual palette. “It’s a West Side show,” said Q. “Ballard lives in Malibu, and she goes home to the beach. That’s her peace among the dark underbelly of her work. It’s an interesting juxtaposition.” While Ballard may take Bosch out of the night and into the light, Welliver hinted that fans shouldn’t expect him to stay quiet. “There is some crossover,” he teased. “And the guy she didn’t trust? Might be the one person she can rely on.”

Amazon Prime Video has unveiled the teaser trailer for Ballard, which showcases the new series starring Maggie Q as Detective Renée Ballard. As Bosch: Legacy nears its conclusion, Welliver steps back from his iconic role as Harry Bosch, though he will make a brief appearance in Ballard to help pass the torch. The series follows Ballard as she takes charge of the LAPD’s new cold case division—a severely underfunded, all-volunteer unit tasked with tackling the city’s largest backlog of unsolved crimes.

Driven by empathy and relentless resolve, Ballard dives into decades-old cases and soon stumbles upon a deep-rooted conspiracy. To navigate the growing threats to both her team and herself, Ballard turns to her trusted mentor, retired detective Harry Bosch, for guidance. The cast also includes John Carroll Lynch, Rebecca Field, Michael Mosley, Amy Hill, Victoria Moroles, Courtney Taylor, Hector Hugo, Noah Bean, and Michael Cassidy. The series is executive produced by a team including Michael Connelly, Michael Alaimo, and others.

The first teaser for Ballard packs in plenty of tension, chases, and fist-fights, along with a late-breaking cameo from Welliver’s Bosch. The trailer opens with Ballard, the LAPD’s self-proclaimed “punching bag,” attempting to find some career redemption by taking on the cold cases of the city. However, it is clear that this will not be a walk in the park for the intrepid detective. From Ballard’s ominous appraisal of her own career and the public view of the department, a burst of quick-cut scenes gives everyone a taste of the action they will be getting in the series.

While Bosch: Legacy ends with its third season, the finale serves as an introduction to Ballard. It is a passing of the torch that allows fans to transition into the new series smoothly. Welliver discussed how the show's end will set up Renée as the lead for her own show, praising Maggie Q's performance as the character. He noted that the characters initially mistrust one another but ultimately recognize the need to work together to solve cold cases.

In the finale, Ballard visits Bosch in his office with a murder case closely resembling one he had been involved with years ago. “Ballard discovers the murder book from this case has gone missing, and she believes he stole them from the station,” Welliver explained. Although she initially approaches him clandestinely, their relationship evolves as they realize they are not dissimilar in their relentless work ethic.

As for the new series, it promises to explore the dynamic between Bosch and Ballard further. “They have to set aside their differences in order to do this,” Welliver said. “Maggie Q is fantastic as the character, and anyone who’s read the books will be extremely pleased with her interpretation of Ballard.”

Ballard’s story will not just be about solving cases; it will delve into the emotional toll of chasing justice when everyone else has moved on. The series is shaping up to be more than just a procedural; it’s an emotional, high-stakes dive into the lives of those who refuse to let go of the past.

As fans await the release of Ballard, they can catch up on all episodes of Bosch: Legacy Season 3, which are currently streaming. The franchise, which has captivated audiences since its inception, is set to continue with this new chapter, promising to keep Welliver’s Bosch in viewers’ lives a little longer.

With its rich narrative and complex characters, Ballard is poised to be a worthy successor to the beloved Bosch series. As the franchise evolves, it remains dedicated to exploring themes of justice, corruption, and the personal demons that haunt those who serve and protect.
