Police Officer Killed In Drug Raid Honored Posthumously

The community mourns as authorities intensify search for fugitive drug suspect Bui Dinh Khanh.

On April 18, 2025, a tragic event unfolded in Quang Ninh, where a police officer lost his life while combating drug trafficking. Senior Lieutenant Nguyen Dang Khai, a member of the Drug Crime Investigation Police Department, was posthumously honored for his bravery in the line of duty.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Hoa Binh signed Decision No. 794/QD-TTg, awarding the "Fatherland Acknowledges Merit" certificate to Khai, who sacrificed himself during an operation against illegal narcotics. This commendation reflects the government's recognition of the risks faced by law enforcement officials in their relentless fight against crime.

The incident that led to Khai's death occurred during a police operation on the evening of April 17, 2025. Around 20:20, the Quang Ninh Provincial Police task force, led by the Drug Crime Investigation Police Department, conducted an operation near the Dragon Castle apartment complex in Ha Long City. They successfully arrested two suspects and seized 16 bricks of heroin.

However, as the police pursued additional suspects, the situation escalated. The suspects, armed with military-grade weapons, retaliated against the officers. Tragically, during this confrontation, Senior Lieutenant Nguyen Dang Khai was shot and killed, while two other officers sustained injuries.

In recognition of his service and sacrifice, the Minister of Public Security signed Decision No. 2786/QD-BCA-X01, promoting Khai from Senior Lieutenant to Lieutenant Colonel, effective from April 17, 2025. This posthumous promotion is a testament to his commitment to public safety and the fight against drug trafficking.

Meanwhile, the investigation into the drug trafficking ring continues. Authorities are actively searching for Bui Dinh Khanh, a 31-year-old suspect linked to the operation. Khanh is believed to be part of a larger drug trafficking network led by 58-year-old Nguyen Huu Dang.

On the night of April 17, as police closed in, Khanh and his accomplices attempted to flee the scene. Reports indicate that Khanh took a taxi shortly after the confrontation with police, traveling for over ten minutes from Ha Long City to Quang Yen Town. The taxi driver, T.V.Q., recounted the encounter, stating that Khanh appeared anxious and urged him to drive quickly, but he did not suspect that he was carrying a fugitive.

Upon realizing the gravity of the situation, the taxi driver later contacted the police to provide details about Khanh's flight. This information is crucial as authorities work to apprehend Khanh, who remains at large.

Residents in Khanh's neighborhood expressed shock upon learning about his involvement in the drug trafficking operation. Neighbors described him as a polite and well-mannered individual who had recently presented himself as a responsible member of the community. Some noted that he had been living with his mother and had previously worked in a restaurant.

In the months leading up to his arrest, Khanh had seemingly changed his behavior, appearing more reserved and less engaged with local friends. He even purchased a white five-seater car about a month ago, which he rarely used, further contributing to the facade he maintained.

As the investigation unfolds, local officials and community members are grappling with the duality of Khanh’s character. His outward demeanor belied his alleged criminal activities, leaving many to question how someone who appeared so ordinary could be involved in such serious crimes.

Authorities have intensified their search for Khanh, who is believed to be evading capture by changing locations frequently. The police are urging anyone with information about his whereabouts to come forward.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in combating drug-related crimes in Vietnam. The bravery of officers like Nguyen Dang Khai serves as a reminder of the risks taken by those who serve to protect the community.

As the community mourns the loss of a dedicated officer, they also remain vigilant in the fight against drug trafficking, recognizing the importance of cooperation between law enforcement and the public in ensuring safety.

In light of these events, the Quang Ninh Provincial Police have reiterated their commitment to tackling drug crime with increased vigilance and proactive measures. The tragic sacrifice of Senior Lieutenant Nguyen Dang Khai will not be forgotten, and his legacy will continue to inspire those in the force.
