Netflix's The Residence Honors Andre Braugher After Death

The series pays tribute to the late actor with emotional nods to his legacy in its final episode.

Netflix's new series The Residence features a heartfelt tribute to the late Andre Braugher, best known for his role in Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The murder-mystery series, which debuted on March 20, 2025, follows an investigation into a death at the White House and originally intended for Braugher to star as chief usher AB Wynter.

Tragically, Braugher passed away in late 2023 after filming half of his scenes for the show, as production was halted due to strikes. He was replaced by actor Giancarlo Esposito, notable for his roles in hit series like Breaking Bad.

At the end of the series, viewers are greeted with a poignant title card that reads, "In memory of Andre Braugher," solidifying the impact of the beloved actor. Esposito, reflecting on stepping into the role, shared a deeply emotional response, saying, "I couldn’t be prouder and more honored to be stepping into Shondaland’s The Residence for someone that I loved and respected and cherished in Andre Braugher." This shows the respectful acknowledgment of Braugher's legacy within the cast.

The narrative of The Residence provides a thrilling whodunnit backdrop, with Uzo Aduba leading the cast as detective Cordelia Cupp. She embarks on a complex investigation to solve a murder during a White House state dinner, a task complicated by the variety of guests and staff present. This setting creates a lively atmosphere as Cupp delves into the intricate web of potential suspects.

The show not only emphasizes the turmoil surrounding the murder but also serves as a testament to Braugher’s enduring legacy as an actor. His colleagues have spoken warmly of him, with Susan Kelechi Watson describing Braugher's brilliance and charisma. She recalled, "One of the things that drew me to this was the fact that Andre Braugher was going to do it. Honest to God, I think he is not only brilliant as a dramatic actor but his comedy, it’s really quite genius; some of the stuff that he's able to do comedically that seemed to just come naturally to him."

Fans were eager to see Braugher return to the small screen following his acclaimed run in Brooklyn Nine-Nine. His portrayal of Captain Ray Holt garnered much admiration, and the anticipation for his role in The Residence was palpable. Unfortunately, his battle with lung cancer, diagnosed a few months before his passing, ended that hope. Reports indicate that he was a former smoker who had quit in 2010, underscoring the tragic nature of his health struggles.

With all eight episodes now available for streaming on Netflix, viewers can experience the full murder mystery while also paying homage to Braugher’s remarkable career. His character, AB Wynter, is played by Esposito, who has noted the responsibility and honor he feels in continuing Braugher’s legacy.

The show's production team has ensured that Braugher's spirit remains alive through the project— from the moves made to honor him to the deep respect echoed throughout the cast and crew. Esposito expressed this sentiment well, capturing the essence of camaraderie forged through shared tributes: "To be afforded the opportunity to create in his honor with this incredible team extends the depth and breadth of his legacy through all of us who loved him so dearly."

As viewers dive into the chaotic universe of The Residence, they not only engage with a thrilling mystery but also participate in celebrating an iconic actor's legacy, of whom the entertainment world is undoubtedly poorer without.
