Netflix Announces Second Season Of The Eternaut

The Argentine sci-fi series will explore deeper narratives and concepts in its upcoming season.

Netflix's Argentine sci-fi series The Eternaut premiered on April 30, 2025, and quickly captured the attention of viewers, breaking into the streaming platform's top 10. Following its successful debut, the streaming giant announced a second season, set to explore deeper into the narrative.

Francisco 'Paco' Ramos, Netflix’s Latin American programming boss, emphasized the significance of the upcoming season during an interview with Deadline. He stated, "Season 2 is going to be very important. It’s going to dig into a lot of sci-fi concepts that were just pointed out in Season 1, and they are going to be fully blown." This sentiment was echoed by producer Matías Mosteirin, who expressed confidence in wrapping up the story beautifully with approximately eight more episodes.

Based on the iconic 1957 Argentine comic by Héctor G. Oesterheld, illustrated by Francisco Solano López, The Eternaut follows the harrowing journey of a group of survivors in Buenos Aires as they combat an invisible threat unleashed by a toxic snowfall that decimates the population. The series stars renowned actor Ricardo Darín in the role of Juan Salvo, a character central to the unfolding drama.

Ramos elaborated on the show's structure, noting how the scale of the narrative expands with each episode. "Episode one has a tiny scale; it’s just in the house. Then in episode two, the scale opens to the building, and then in three, it becomes bigger again, the neighborhood. By the fourth episode, it is the whole city," he explained. This gradual escalation not only serves to heighten the tension but also allows viewers to connect with the story on a personal level, as Ramos aimed for an experience that felt relatable to audiences.

The production of The Eternaut is being hailed as one of the largest TV projects ever to come out of Argentina, with Ramos stating, "The country has a very strong reputation and history of making television and film, but I really feel this one is above and beyond anything that has ever been done here before." The series showcases a blend of artistic vision and cutting-edge technology, featuring over 2,000 visual effects shots, which involved collaboration with international partners across various countries.

Bruno Stagnaro, the series creator, director, and co-writer, is set to return for the second season. He has expressed a desire to challenge the team creatively and technically, aiming to implement lessons learned from the first season. Mosteirin confirmed, "We want to challenge ourselves in the second season just as we challenged ourselves in the first one. We want to go for more, technically and creatively. We want to use all the knowledge we gained to do things on the second season that we didn’t manage to do on the first." This commitment to innovation reflects the team’s dedication to delivering a compelling viewing experience.

Meanwhile, the anticipation for Revival, another adaptation based on a comic book, is building as it gears up for its premiere on June 12, 2025, on SYFY. The series offers a unique twist on the zombie genre, focusing instead on the recently deceased who return to life, acting just as they did before their deaths. The show stars Melanie Scrofano as Dana Cypress, a local officer caught in a murder mystery amidst a town gripped by fear and confusion.

Created by Aaron B. Koontz and Luke Boyce, Revival is based on the comic series by Tim Seeley and artist Mike Norton, published by Image Comics from 2012 to 2017. Each episode will be available on Peacock the week following its SYFY broadcast.

As The Eternaut continues to captivate audiences, the question of when Season 2 will debut remains unanswered. Given that the first season took eight months to shoot and a year for post-production, it is unlikely that fans will see new episodes before 2027. Darín, while promoting the show, clarified that the second season's episodes have not yet been filmed, stating, "We are going to tell the whole story, from beginning to end. And the end of the first season does not conclude." This leaves fans eager for more, knowing that the series will continue to delve into the rich narrative established in the first season.

With two highly anticipated projects in the pipeline, Netflix is positioning itself as a leader in Latin American content, showcasing stories that resonate with local audiences while appealing to a global viewership. As the streaming service expands its offerings, the impact of these productions on the industry will likely be significant, inspiring other creators to explore ambitious storytelling in the region.

In a landscape where adaptations are becoming increasingly popular, The Eternaut and Revival exemplify the potential for comic book stories to transcend their original formats, offering fresh narratives that engage viewers in new ways. As fans await further developments, the excitement surrounding these series underscores the growing appetite for innovative storytelling in the realm of television.

As the world of streaming continues to evolve, it will be fascinating to see how these adaptations shape the future of content creation in Latin America and beyond.
