Nagoya, Japan, witnessed significant evacuation measures and transport disruptions on the morning of the 15th, as authorities undertook the removal of unexploded ordnance (UXO) discovered at a construction site.
This operation was initiated due to the discovery of a 250 kg American bomb on October 24 during dismantling work at the Catholic Nyuike Church site, located in Nagoya’s Higashi Ward. Concern surrounding public safety prompted the intervention of local city officials and the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force.
Prior to the operation, authorities evacuated approximately 3,700 residents within a 300-meter radius of the site, urging them to seek refuge at nearby community centers and universities. Local public transport was also affected, with rearrangements made to several subway lines. According to reports, operations began around 10:00 AM on the 15th, leading to the closure of roads surrounding the bomb site.
The work was carried out smoothly, and the site was declared safe after the explosives were successfully defused by the 103rd Bomb Disposal Unit. The operation wrapped up within three hours, much to the relief of anxious residents returning home.
One young woman who evacuated with her dog expressed, “Dogs were anxious at the evacuation site, but now we can breathe easy.” She noted the stressful environment but emphasized her relief post-operation.
Another resident, a 70-year-old man, shared his concerns, stating, “There’s never been a failure during UXO removals, but you never know where one might happen.” His worries echoed those of many community members as the presence of unexploded ordnance brought back fears of past conflicts.
Commander Naoki Yoshikawa of the 103rd Bomb Disposal Unit reassured the public by stating, “Nagoya has had previous discoveries of UXOs, and we will continue to work with the municipality to keep citizens safe. We are well-prepared for such emergencies.” This sentiment highlighted the importance of preparedness and collaboration between military and local officials.
The city of Nagoya has seen several instances of unexploded ordnance originating from World War II, so the recent find and subsequent operation revived public interest and concern. City officials have reiterated efforts to educate the community about historical bombs and safety measures.
