Đền Nghè's Artifacts Recognized As National Treasures

Phó Thủ tướng acknowledges the cultural significance of Hải Phòng's historical artifacts.

Phó Thủ tướng Lê Thành Long has officially recognized 33 new national treasures through Decision No. 1712, marking the thirteenth set of significant artifacts acknowledged this year. Among these treasures is the Đền Nghè's collection, consisting of exquisite gold ceremonial items held at Bảo tàng Hải Phòng, illuminating the cultural richness intrinsic to Hải Phòng.

This collection contains 16 detailed gold artifacts crafted at the turn of the 20th century, reflecting the artisan skills of the time, with each piece containing gold content ranging from 92% to 98%. The presentation of these artifacts not only honors their historical significance but also their connection to the local worship practices associated with the revered figure of Lê Chân, the Holy Mother, who is acknowledged as the founder of Hải Phòng.

According to Bảo tàng Hải Phòng, this collection is more than just precious metals; it's intertwined with the local identity and traditions. The artifacts were reportedly gifted to Đền Nghè by Phan Trần Trúc during the Nguyễn Dynasty, cementing their historical importance. Phạm Bá Hùng, who was responsible for overseeing Đền Nghè, had placed these artifacts within the National Bank of Vietnam back in 1959, maintaining their preservation until recent times.

"Đền Nghè's artifacts represent the belief system surrounding Lê Chân and the peak of gold craftsmanship from the early 20th century," stated representatives from Bảo tàng Hải Phòng. This perspective highlights the broader cultural significance of these items, serving as tangible ties to historical narratives and local customs.

After years of being securely stored, the Hải Phòng Department of Culture and Sports advocated for the transfer of these artifacts to the museum for public access, recognizing their delay in promoting their rich cultural narrative.

On exhibit since May 2024, the gold items drew significant interest from the public and tourists alike. "We have recognized these items to pay homage to our cultural heritage and the wonders of local craftsmanship," remarked Phó Thủ tướng Lê Thành Long, emphasizing the importance of preserving such remarkable pieces of cultural identity.

The collection, showcasing items like golden bracelets, trays, and other ceremonial tools, reveals the high level of manual craftsmanship attributable to local goldsmiths. Each artifact tells its own story, reflecting the skills and traditions passed down through generations. The local belief system around Lê Chân, widely celebrated among the people of Hải Phòng, enhances the significance of these artifacts, marking them as precious treasures of the region.

Community pride runs high with recognition of the Đền Nghè collection, and its standing as national treasures effectively emphasizes the need to preserve cultural heritage. It's not just about the artifacts; it's about maintaining the connection to the folklore, identity, and historical narrative they embody. Recognition such as this solidifies the importance of local traditions and paves the way for future generations to appreciate and learn from their cultural roots.

Through such acknowledgments, Hải Phòng continues to highlight and cherish its historical figures, showcasing the importance of both the craftsmanship and the legacies they represent, ensuring they are celebrated for years to come.
