GLENDALE, Calif. (KABC) -- A small vegetation fire dubbed the Mountain Fire ignited on Sunday night near the 2 Freeway, prompting immediate action from firefighters. Reports of the fire first came in shortly before 7:30 p.m., near East Mountain Street, just south of Glendale Community College.
Firefighters quickly mobilized, leading to the closure of several southbound lanes of the Freeway. By 8 p.m., firefighters had successfully contained the blaze, which was estimated to cover a quarter-acre of hillside.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the situation led to significant traffic disruption, as three southbound lanes were shut down just south of Fern Lane. Commuters were advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes such as the Foothill (210) Freeway or Verdugo Road. CHP issued a SigAlert which was expected to last until 10 p.m.
While the fire threatened no structures, there were no immediate reports of evacuations or injuries resulting from the incident. The precise cause of the fire remains undetermined.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as smoke billowed from the hillside, visible from the busy freeway. Fire crews were seen battling the flames both from the road and from elevated positions above the fire. After mopping up any remaining hot spots, the leftmost two lanes of the freeway were reopened to traffic.
This incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers posed by brush fires, particularly as warmer weather approaches. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any indications of fire immediately to the authorities.
The Glendale Fire Department continues to assess the area for potential risks and offers resources for fire safety tips to the community. Fire officials have emphasized the importance of preparedness as fire season approaches.
Authorities have stated they will provide updates as more information becomes available about the fire's cause and management. Residents can stay informed by tuning to local news sources and following city updates online.
