More Women Share Al Fayed's Sexual Assault Allegations

Lawyers represent 60 women claiming abuse by the former Harrods owner

Allegations surrounding former Harrods owner Mohamed Al Fayed have intensified as more women come forward with claims of sexual assault and inappropriate behavior during his tenure. Last year, after the billionaire's death at 94, these allegations resurfaced, leading to serious discussions about his legacy and the potential failures of institutions meant to protect vulnerable staff members.

The calls for justice have not only stemmed from individual testimonies but have been amplified by the BBC's documentary and podcast series titled Al-Fayed: Predator at Harrods, which detailed harrowing accounts from women who say they were victimized during their time at the iconic London department store. The project has reportedly prompted significant numbers of additional women to come forward, bringing the total number of accusers represented by the Justice for Harrods Survivors group to 60.

Among the accusations is the claim by one woman, known as Kate, who stated she was just 16 when Al Fayed assaulted her. She recounted how the events of her teenage years marked her life forever, making her wary of men and instilling paranoia about safety. "Being assaulted by Fayed at 16 changed the course of my life completely," Kate expressed, wanting her story heard to shed light on Al Fayed's behavior.

Kate detailed inappropriate questioning by Fayed shortly after starting at Harrods, noting one specific incident where he asked about her sexual activity. Feeling pressured and confused, Kate eventually underwent what she thought was merely a "company medical" with Dr. Ann Coxon, who also became entangled in the allegations as more former employees reported invasive sexual health tests being administered at Fayed's request.

Dr. Coxon has since denied conducting any intrusive tests, stating, "I never performed those tests." Yet her denial clashes with the experiences of other women, including Natacha, who called the examinations "wholly unnecessary" and "intrusive." Natacha is part of the group pushing for formal complaints to the General Medical Council, aimed at holding Dr. Coxon accountable for her actions.

The current owners of Harrods have expressed deep appallment at the allegations and have gone as far as to apologize to the victims. They have stated, "The Harrods of today is quite different from the one Fayed ran, and we are committed to ensuring all claims are taken seriously and handled with empathy." Early compensation offers have reportedly gone to several former employees who have come forward since 2023.

The sentiment among the Harrods employees emphasizes systemic failings—many women felt they had no choice but to comply with Fayed's demands due to the power dynamics involved, leading to feelings of fear and helplessness. It raises questions about how harassment could flourish unchecked within such prestigious workplaces.

Compounding these allegations, Dai Davies, the former head of Scotland Yard's Royal Protection Command, indicated he had warned Buckingham Palace back in the late 90s about Fayed's growing reputation and suggestions of inappropriate behavior. "I had raised concerns of investigations and the nature of rumors surrounding Fayed's interactions with his female staff," he recalled, emphasizing the need for action then, which only now seems to be garnering the attention it deserves.

Adding to the complexity, it was reported by the BBC last week after the documentary aired, allegations of abuse also extend beyond Harrods, with claims surfacing related to Fulham Football Club, where Fayed served as chairman for many years. The club has committed to investigating any allegations of abuse related to Fayed, as survivors turn their gaze toward other positions and industries he influenced.

Responses from other survivors echo similar sentiments. "We were lambs to the slaughter," stated one woman involved with the Justice for Harrods Survivors group. With their focus now aimed at accountability, they aim to highlight not just the misdeeds of Fayed but also the institutional neglect and systemic failures spread across multiple organizations allowing such abuses to take place.

The current climate is fostering renewed discussions around sexual assault and workplace safety, urging victims to come forward to reclaim their voices and demand justice. The burgeoning support for the survivors sends waves through media outlets, legislative bodies, and institutions, demanding to confront the issues head-on.

With investigations continuing, the responses from legal authorities resonate with caution as they aim to prepare for the next steps addressing these disturbing allegations. Each testimony now verifies what Davies described nearly three decades ago: there was always knowledge, yet indifference prevailed.

For many, sharing their stories is the first step toward healing, and as awareness grows, so does the quest for justice, leading to the conclusion of accountability not only for individual perpetrators like Al Fayed but also for the systems and structures enabling such actions to happen.

No longer silenced, these women are strengthening their ranks, assuring visibility and accountability as the confidence to share their experiences leads the charge against the culture of silence surrounding sexual assaults.

Each day, the movement expands, and with it, hope grows for closing the chasm between past suffering and future justice.
