Mohammad Nabi Delays Retirement To Play With Son

The Afghanistan cricketer’s dream is to share the field with his talented son Hassan.

Afghanistan's star cricketer Mohammad Nabi has made headlines with his surprising decision to prolong his One Day International (ODI) career beyond the 2025 Champions Trophy. Just days before he turns 40, the all-rounder revealed his new motivation: he wants to share the field with his son, Hassan Eisakhil, who at 18, is also making waves in cricket.

Nabi, known for his significant contributions to Afghanistan's cricket history, initially intended to retire after the prestigious tournament. "These might not be my last ODIs (the Champions Trophy), and I will probably play less ODIs and give chances to the youngsters to build experience. I’ve discussed with the senior players, and in the high-level games, maybe or maybe not, we’ll see. It will depend on my fitness," Nabi stated during his interview with the International Cricket Council (ICC).

For Nabi, the idea of playing alongside his son is not just about extending his career; it speaks volumes about his deep commitment to family and ambition within the sport. "It’s my dream (to play together for the country), and hopefully we can do it. He (Eisakhil) is doing very well. He is a hard worker, and I’m also pushing him to work," he emphasized, showcasing the mentor role he embraces.

The legendary all-rounder made his ODI debut back in 2009 against Scotland and has played a total of 170 ODIs, amassing 3,618 runs and claiming 172 wickets. His last ODI appearance before the upcoming Champions Trophy took place against Zimbabwe in December 2024. His next match is slated for February 21, 2025, when Afghanistan faces South Africa, marking the country's first appearance at the Champions Trophy, where they are grouped with cricketing giants England, Australia, and South Africa.

Hassan Eisakhil, unlike his father, plays as a batter and has already represented Afghanistan's Under-19 team, showcasing promising talent at such a young age. The natural progression seems plausible: if Nabi extends his career, the chance to tag team on the international stage could become reality.

The Afghanistan cricket team has undeniably garnered respect and notoriety on the international cricketing scene, particularly after their commendable performance during the 2023 ODI World Cup, where they finished sixth—securing their spot in the Champions Trophy.

Fans and cricket enthusiasts are now eager to see how this unique dynamic between father and son will play out on the field. It not only highlights Nabi's personal aspirations but also symbolizes the growing cricket culture within Afghanistan and the importance of family ties within sports.

While Nabi aims to give younger players much-needed opportunities, his commitment to possibly participating at the highest levels of the game speaks volumes about his passion and dedication to cricket. It will certainly be interesting for followers of the sport to witness what the next few years hold for this father-son duo and the Afghanistan cricket team as they chase their respective dreams.

With the countdown to the Champions Trophy underway, all eyes will be on Nabi and his team, as they navigate milstones together, not just as countrymen but as family—hoping to push each other toward their ambitions on the world stage of cricket.
