A young hiker missing for four days in the Picos de Europa was located alive on Friday. Senén Turienzo Llamazares, 23 years old, was found at Jou de los Boches, following extensive search efforts by emergency services. His family had alerted authorities after not hearing from him since he began his hiking route from Bejes to Covadonga on December 23.
The search operation was triggered by the family’s concern when Turienzo did not return as planned. It was initiated on December 25, with rescue services quickly mobilizing personnel from Asturias and Cantabria. An advanced command post was established at Sotres to coordinate the search.
On Friday morning, after the efforts had resumed, various air and ground teams continued to comb the rugged terrain of the mountains. Working conditions were tough, as members of the search party faced severe winter weather and challenging terrain.
"We were very happy to find him alive. The teamwork by both communities has been commendable," noted Eduardo Navarro from the Asturias Emergency Services.
Celebrated via Twitter, the 112 Asturias team stated, "Today we got very good news. The search operation has successfully located the missing hiker alive." The multiple facets of the operation involved specialized units including drones, canine units, and mountain rescue teams.
The operation encompassed over 50 active members, including firefighters and the Guardia Civil mountain teams. Various areas were covered during the search, with attention drawn particularly to the terrain surrounding the last known location of Turienzo.
Rescue teams reported hearing cries for help, which guided them directly to the hiker. Upon locating him, he was conscious but reported with some injuries, including cranial trauma and possible fractures. He was then airlifted by a medical helicopter to the Hospital Universitario de Oviedo for evaluation and treatment.
Isabel Urrutia, President of the Cantabria government, commented on the efforts of the joint rescue operation, emphasizing the first hours as being key to ensuring the best outcome. She stated, "This rescue was complicated due to the conditions of the mountain." The need for swift action contributed to the successful locating of Turienzo.
Following the successful conclusion to this brave rescue, Maria José Sáenz de Buruaga, the President of the Cantabria government praised, "We thank all the emergency services deployed and the professionals who sacrificed their festivities to help," highlighting the dedication of those involved.
This incident has brought attention to the substantial risks associated with hiking, especially during the winter months when conditions can turn perilous. Authorities encourage hikers to be adequately prepared, equipped, and to inform someone about their plans before embarking on such explorations.
After Turienzo receives necessary medical attention, local officials are hopeful for his speedy recovery. His story serves not only as a reminder of the potential dangers present within the mountains but also the importance of community support and emergency services ready to respond.
The thrilling conclusion of this rescue has combined relief and gratitude among the local community, as they celebrate the young hiker’s safe return and recognize the dedication and hard work of all involved on this operation.
