Minecraft Launches New Zealand Adventure DLC

Experience immersive gaming that encourages real-world exploration of New Zealand’s stunning landscapes and culture.

New Zealand calls, and for the first time, players can explore it like never before—first in Minecraft, and don’t forget to enjoy its beauty in real life. In a groundbreaking collaboration between Tourism New Zealand, Warner Bros. Pictures, and Mojang Studios, the new Minecraft downloadable content (DLC) titled Aotearoa New Zealand has transformed six of the country's most stunning locations into interactive adventures.

This first-of-its-kind destination DLC invites players to experience the wonders of New Zealand through exciting gameplay before they even step foot in the country. From rafting through glowing caves to observing rare birds on predator-free islands and paddling traditional Māori canoes along golden beaches, this project tantalizes the senses and drives home the beauty of the Kiwi land.

Explore six iconic locations – In Minecraft and in the real world

Let's dive into these six iconic locations that players will explore within Minecraft and in reality, starting with the enchanting Waitomo Caves, located in the Waikato region. In-game experiences include navigating a cave parkour run in two dimensions, capturing stunning photos of glowing stalactites and stalagmites, and embarking on heart-pounding black water rafting adventures.

In the real world, visitors can take guided tours through the glowworm caves, exploring Ruakuri Cave’s limestone and underground waterfalls. The phrase “Waitomo” comes from the Māori words “wai” (water) and “tomo” (hole), aptly describing the underground rivers flowing below the stunning limestone landscapes.

Next, we head to Rotorua in the Bay of Plenty, often known for its geothermal activity. Players will rush through geothermal pools and geysers while trying to capture the magic of this unique landscape. Traditionally a place of Māori culture, Rotorua features enriching in-game experiences, such as observing geysers that erupt up to 20 times a day. In-person, visitors can explore the vibrant Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland and visit Te Puia to experience Māori art and tradition alongside the remarkable Pōhutu geyser.

Kapiti Island: A haven for wildlife

Moving on to Kapiti Island, known for being a sanctuary for over 1,200 little spotted kiwis, players will begin their journey by searching for native bird species, including tūī and kererū. In the game, some birds can only be found depending on the time of day, adding an element of challenge and fun.

In reality, visitors to the Kapiti Island Nature Reserve can participate in guided tours that introduce them to rare bird species and the island’s conservation efforts while learning about Māori heritage. It’s a meaningful blend of nature and culture that resonates throughout this adventure.

Abel Tasman: Kayaking through pristine waters

Next up is Abel Tasman, renowned for its crystal-clear waters. Within Minecraft, players will have the chance to paddle a waka tuarua (double-hulled canoe) through Rakauroa, intertwining themselves with action-packed rhythm games that illustrate Māori traditional practices. The virtual experience culminates in breathtaking scenes where players fly above the Waikoropupū Springs, showcasing the shimmering water below.

In the real world, this location invites explorers to kayak along its golden shorelines, potentially encountering seals, dolphins, and rare blue penguins. The Abel Tasman Coast Track allows hikers to wade through breathtaking scenery while indulging in an unforgettable mix of relaxation and excitement.

Tekapo: Stargazing like never before

The magical Tekapo region is recognized as part of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve. Gamers will steer a 4WD vehicle past a mountaintop observatory while engaging with challenges that test their constellation-spotting skills using telescopes. The world-class views are matched only by what players experience in the game.

For those fortunate enough to visit in real life, a 4WD adventure offers stunning views of lakes and mountains, and the acclaimed Mount John Observatory invites stargazers to peer into telescopes, observing planets and galaxies above a backdrop of breathtaking dark skies.

Doubtful Sound: The Sound of Silence

Lastly, the DLC highlights Doubtful Sound, celebrated as the “Sound of Silence.” Its remote nature offers participants insight into the beauty of New Zealand without the hum of cities—just untouched nature. In Minecraft, players navigate a boat from a bird's-eye view, sailing alongside wandering dolphins and seals while standing in awe of the dramatic fjord landscapes, culminating in encounters with Paikea, the legendary whale rider.

When visiting Doubtful Sound in the real world, adventurers can take a Fiordland cruise through 40-kilometer cliffs, marveling at the reflective waters and waterfalls, while they encounter an abundance of wildlife, including dolphins, sea lions, and rare Fiordland penguins.

As the first of its kind, the Minecraft Aotearoa New Zealand DLC bridges the worlds of gaming and real-life adventure, showcasing the breathtaking landscapes and rich culture of New Zealand. It beckons players to dive in, enjoy it virtually, and then explore the splendors of this dynamic destination in person. There's something for everyone in this remarkable virtual experience that transfers into unforgettable real-world memories.
