Merlin Theater Celebrates Three Special Theater Days

March events highlight the importance of theater for children and young audiences through engaging performances.

In March 2025, Teatrul pentru Copii și Tineret Merlin Timișoara is set to celebrate three significant events dedicated to the art of theater. Eager audiences, both young and old, are invited to join this festive occasion marking World Theater Day for Children and Youth, World Puppetry Day, and World Theater Day. Each event will highlight the vital role of theater in enriching the lives of children and fostering creativity.

March 20 marks World Theater Day for Children and Youth, a special day that has been celebrated since 2001 following the initiative of the International Association of Theater for Children and Young People (ASSITEJ). The day aims to underscore the importance of theater in the lives of the younger generation. At 10:00 AM on this day, the Merlin Theater will stage the beloved play "Fata babei și fata moșneagului," directed by Ștefan Sasu, with captivating music composed by Marius Mihalca. This event not only celebrates the power of youth theater but also honors Marius Mihalca, a composer who has created music for twelve different theater shows over an impressive span of 25 years.

In 2025, ASSITEJ's message, transmitted by President Sue Giles, enthusiastically encourages theater engagement: "Take a child to the theater, TODAY! Or bring the theater to them!" This call to action underscores the organization’s commitment to promote the artistic development of children through theatrical experiences.

Continuing the celebration, March 21 marks World Puppetry Day, a date recognized annually since 2003 as instituted by the International Union of Puppeteers (UNIMA). This day highlights the unique artistry behind puppetry and its significance in childhood entertainment. The Merlin Theater will present the play "Orice șoarece iubește cașcavalul," a tale with Shakespearean echoes that thoughtfully explores themes of love and family prejudices between two mouse families. This delightful performance will have follow-up shows on March 23 at 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM, allowing audiences to experience the magic of puppetry twice!

Finally, March 27 will celebrate World Theater Day, an occasion established in 1962 by the International Theater Institute (ITI) to honor the art of theater and its societal influence. This year, as part of the "Thursday at Merlin" event, the theater will unveil the poignant play "Profu’ de religie," written by Mihaela Michailov and directed by Mihaela Lichiardopol. The play, performed at 6:00 PM, focuses on a true story that became a national news topic, exploring the ways in which truth can be distorted by the media and public opinion. With a narrative that resonates with young people, it raises reflections that are equally relevant for parents, teachers, and journalists alike.

The performances will feature a talented cast including Mădălina Ghițescu, Olivera Iovanovici, Raul Bastean, Raul Lăzărescu, and Robert Copoț, all contributing to the rich tapestry of storytelling.

All events at Teatrul pentru Copii și Tineret Merlin are supported by the Timiș County Council, showcasing a collaborative effort to foster the performing arts within the region.
