Fujifilm Unveils GFX100RF First Fixed-Lens Digital Camera

This new addition redefines medium-format photography with a lightweight design and innovative features.

In a significant leap for photography enthusiasts, FUJIFILM Corporation has unveiled the GFX100RF, marking the first time a fixed-lens digital camera has been introduced in the GFX series. Scheduled for global release in April 2025, this innovative camera is designed to blend the robustness of medium-format photography with the compactness and convenience of a lightweight design.

Weighing only 1.62 pounds (735 grams), the GFX100RF is the lightest option in Fujifilm’s GFX lineup. The camera features a large-format sensor of approximately 1.7 times larger than a traditional 35mm full-frame sensor, enabling users to capture stunning images with high resolution and outstanding color reproduction.

As the first digital camera in the GFX series to come with a built-in lens, the GFX100RF includes a FUJINON GF 35mm f/4 lens, which translates to a 28mm equivalent in full-frame terms. This combination allows photographers to work effectively in a variety of settings, from landscapes to street photography, making it an essential tool for travel enthusiasts and professionals seeking spontaneous content creation opportunities.

"GFX100RF redefines portability for the GFX System," commented Victor Ha, Vice President of Electronic Imaging and Optical Devices Divisions at Fujifilm North America. He added that this new model strikes a perfect balance between the company’s traditional straight-out-of-camera philosophy and the GFX System’s more profound imaging capabilities, providing users with high-quality, large format images in a compact package.

The GFX100RF is loaded with advanced features that enhance the user's shooting experience. With the latest GFX 102MP CMOS II sensor and the X-Processor 5 image processing engine, it ensures a faster performance, offering continuous shooting at rates up to 6 frames per second. Additionally, the camera supports internal recording of high-quality DCI/UHD 4K video up to 30p and 10-bit color, making it versatile for both photographers and videographers.

One of the standout functionalities of this new model is its unique aspect ratio dial, allowing the user to switch between nine different formats seamlessly. Fujifilm has also included two new aspect ratios: 3:4 and 17:6, making it more flexible for creative shooting. The dial's tactile operation mirrors the analog feel of Fujifilm's historic film cameras, enriching the shooting experience.

Further enhancing its usability, the GFX100RF incorporates a leaf shutter system, which prevents camera shake and allows for flash synchronization at any shutter speed. Photographers can also benefit from the built-in 4-stop ND filter that facilitates shooting in bright settings while maintaining desired aperture settings. The lens is composed of ten elements in eight groups, including two aspherical lenses, ensuring sharpness and clarity across the frame.

The GFX100RF stands out not just for its capabilities, but also for its thoughtful design. Fujifilm has meticulously crafted the camera to achieve a stylish and functional aesthetic. The top plate, made from precision-machined aluminum, enhances the tactile quality, making it a camera that photographers will be proud to own and operate.

Additionally, users can focus as closely as 7.8 inches (20 centimeters) from the lens, making it ideal for close-up photography. With the enhanced autofocus system, integrated AF prediction, and the ability to recognize diverse subjects, including pets and vehicles, the GFX100RF positions itself as a cutting-edge tool tailored for a modern photographer's needs.

"The GFX100RF will bring the experience of shooting high-resolution images in a different dimension to even more users," stated a Fujifilm representative, encapsulating the camera’s potential impact on the market.

All indicators suggest that the GFX100RF will be competitively priced at $4,900 upon its release. For those grappling with their photographic equipment options, this ambitious innovation by Fujifilm promises a unique blend of form and function that is likely to resonate with both seasoned professionals and eager amateurs alike.

The GFX100RF is set for release in both silver and black finishes. With its versatile design and outstanding imaging capabilities, it should appeal to a broad audience looking to elevate their photography game.

As more details emerge leading up to its launch, industry experts anticipate a strong reception for the GFX100RF, potentially marking the beginning of a new era in the GFX series, making large-format photography more accessible and convenient than ever before.
