In a significant shift for the automotive industry, Mercedes-Benz is set to unveil a dedicated electric platform for its high-performance AMG division, named "AMG.EA," in 2025. This new platform will mark a pivotal moment for AMG, which has previously ventured into electric vehicles (EVs) with models like the EQS 53 and EQE 53. The AMG.EA platform will support two upcoming models: a low-slung sedan scheduled for a 2026 debut and an SUV that will follow shortly after. Michael Schiebe, the head of AMG, emphasized during an exclusive interview at the Miami Grand Prix that the future of AMG electric vehicles will be distinct from standard EVs. "Our electric cars must be true AMG first, then we will follow with regular EV models," he stated.
The AMG.EA platform is designed to utilize high-performance batteries and axial-flux electric motors, which are lighter and provide higher power outputs. Schiebe assured that vehicles built on this platform will offer a driving experience unlike any current EVs on the market, stating, "The car from the AMG.EA platform will not be like any EV currently available; it will stimulate all your senses while driving." While he did not divulge specific details on how AMG plans to achieve this unique driving experience, he hinted that elements such as sound, responsiveness, and feedback from the vehicle will be crucial. "Most EVs on the market can accelerate only once or twice before running out of steam, but AMG cars must be able to repeat this multiple times," he added, referencing the Nürburgring racetrack as a proving ground for performance.
As for the possibility of incorporating simulated gears, akin to Hyundai's N e-Shift system, Schiebe remained non-committal but indicated that the idea is not off the table. He reiterated that AMG's electric vehicles would still deliver the same driving sensations as traditional combustion engine cars. Meanwhile, dealers in the United States who have had the opportunity to test drive prototypes have expressed enthusiasm, with Schiebe noting, "Everyone who has tried it gets out of the car smiling, saying they can forget their previous notions about EVs."
Despite the push towards electric vehicles, AMG has no plans to abandon its iconic V8 engines. Schiebe confirmed that the brand is still developing new V8 models, maintaining that "we just launched the new GT Coupé last year, and there are still many years ahead for the V8 to remain." Although Europe aims to ban combustion engines by 2035, the U.S. lacks similar regulations, leaving AMG without a defined end date for its V8 engines. Speculation about the future of the AMG GT 4-Door model has arisen, with rumors suggesting it may be replaced by an electric sedan. However, Schiebe stated that it is still uncertain, hinting, "There may be a successor model, but for now, we won't speculate on anything further."
In addition to the electric platform, AMG is also working on 'High-tech Electrified' V8 engines, which will integrate electric technology. Schiebe explained, "We are looking for ways to upgrade the V8 to meet new regulations, particularly in Europe, while potentially increasing performance." However, he noted that a full hybrid system may not always be necessary, especially for track enthusiasts who prefer lightweight models like the AMG GT63 Pro 4MATIC+ over heavier hybrids like the AMG GT63 S E Performance. Ultimately, Schiebe emphasized that AMG remains committed to listening to customer demands, stating, "We still see a demand in the market, and AMG's goal is to fulfill our customers' dreams."
Meanwhile, the global electric vehicle market is heating up, with brands like Zeekr, a premium EV brand under China's Geely, making waves with their latest offering, the Zeekr 7X. This new electric SUV is designed to cater to modern consumers seeking luxury, advanced technology, and high-end performance. Positioned as a direct competitor to the Tesla Model Y and BMW iX3, the Zeekr 7X boasts a spacious interior, powerful drivetrain options, and superior fast-charging capabilities.
The Zeekr 7X is available in both rear-wheel drive (RWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations, with pricing set at approximately 52,000 Euros (around 2 million Baht) for the Core RWD version and about 63,000 Euros (around 2.4 million Baht) for the Privilege AWD version. While these prices are higher than conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, the Zeekr 7X offers impressive features and performance that make it a compelling option in the premium EV market.
Sporting a sleek yet elegant design, the Zeekr 7X measures nearly 5 meters in length and features a wheelbase of 2.9 meters, contributing to its robust and refined appearance. It utilizes lithium batteries of 75 kWh and 100 kWh, providing a maximum driving range of up to 780 km (CLTC standard). The RWD version delivers 422 horsepower and accelerates from 0-100 km/h in just 5.8 seconds, while the AWD version boasts an impressive 646 horsepower, achieving the same acceleration in only 3.8 seconds.
One of the Zeekr 7X's strengths is its 800V charging system, allowing for rapid charging from 10% to 80% in just 13 minutes with a high-speed DC charger. Additionally, it comes equipped with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) that encompass various features such as adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and auto parking. A 360-degree camera with a transparent chassis view enhances safety and convenience.
With a 15.5-inch infotainment display and a premium sound system featuring 15 speakers, the Zeekr 7X supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and over-the-air updates. It also includes smart home connectivity and a proprietary AI assistant.
