Mercari Launches Innovative Mobile Service Allowing Data Trade

Users can buy and sell mobile data through the app, enhancing flexibility and cost savings.

Mercari, the popular flea market app, officially entered the mobile phone business on March 4, 2025, launching its new service known as "Mercari Mobile." This move allows users to buy and sell mobile data within the app, borrowing communication lines from major carrier NTT Docomo. By implementing unique features aimed at enhancing user experience, Mercari hopes to attract customers amid growing competition within the telecommunications sector.

The introduction of Mercari Mobile is characterized by two main pricing plans: users can opt for 2 gigabytes of data for 990 yen per month or 20 gigabytes for 2390 yen. Such competitive pricing aligns with Mercari's strategy to create efficient and cost-effective solutions for smartphone users.

A standout feature of this service is its flexibility for users, who can now buy and sell surplus data through the Mercari app. This means if someone has extra data they don't need, they can sell it to another user for profit. The buying and selling occur with individual transactions valued at minimum 200 yen per gigabyte and capped at 500 yen per gigabyte, encouraging users to engage actively with their data needs.

Takeshi Nagasawa, the executive officer overseeing Mercari's MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) business, expressed optimism about this new venture. He elaborated, "I think there are often cases where our service will be cheaper than others, as you can buy someone else’s unused gigabytes cheaply." This innovative approach not only benefits users facing data shortages but also helps those with excess data share with others, enhancing the community aspect of the Mercari brand.

One of the primary goals of launching Mercari Mobile is to strengthen what the company refers to as the "Mercari economic zone," creating synergies between its various services. This strategy indicates Mercari's commitment to becoming more than just a marketplace but rather establishing itself as an all-encompassing service provider catering to the digital needs of its users.

While currently based on NTT Docomo's infrastructure, there are plans to incorporate additional carrier lines, such as KDDI, to broaden service availability. This could prove pivotal as Mercari looks to expand its user base and fortify its offerings against competitors.

Payment for data services will be facilitated through Mercari’s smart payment service, Merpay, and the credit card service Mercard. At the moment, payment options are somewhat limited but Mercari has revealed intentions to broaden these options to improve accessibility for its users.

One notable policy is the prevention of data rollover. Any unused data will not carry over to the next month, posing both challenges and opportunities for users to manage their data usage more thoughtfully. Mercari aims to stimulate user engagement by necessitating more mindful consumption of mobile data ensuring they use what they pay for each month.
