The most significant of the bushfires is raging through the Grampians National Park, where more than 350 firefighters are working alongside 20 water-bombers battling flames on over 19,000 hectares of land. This intense blaze first approached the small hamlet of Mirranatwa on Wednesday and surged again on Friday as high temperatures reached the low 30s paired with strong south-westerly winds. Residents of nearby towns such as Watgania and Mafeking received emergency warnings to leave immediately.
State Control Centre spokesman Luke Hegarty emphasized the urgency of the situation. "Fire activity has increased under the south-westerly wind change," he stated, warning surrounding towns including Pomonal, Barton, Bellfield, Jallukur, Londonderry, and Victoria Valley to stay alert and prepare for potential evacuation.
Adding to the complexity of emergency management, earlier on Friday, police responded to reports of smoke from the Thomastown construction site, resulting from what was believed to be deliberately lit fires. At around 1.45 am, emergency services extinguished this blaze, but then noticed the man on top of the construction crane.
This was just the beginning of the chaos. For several hours, Victoria Police negotiated with the man, described as 50 years old, who was eventually escorted off the scaffolding around 8 am. He was taken to the hospital for treatment related to non-life-threatening injuries, stemming from another incident. "He will be interviewed by police at a later date," the authorities confirmed.
According to reports, High Street was closed in both directions between Main Street and Pleasant Road as the police operation unfolded, creating additional disruptions amid the wildfire chaos. Local shopkeepers and residents were left grappling with the complications of managing their businesses as the area's emergency services juggled the broader crisis.
Back to the bushfire situation, authorities warned communities of the dire danger posed by fires. Notably, the fire remained poised to burn for several weeks, particularly due to the region's persistent drought conditions following two years of rainfall deficiency. Emergency Management Victoria incident controller Mark Gunning stated, "Some of you live on the land; I don’t have to tell you how dry it is," underscoring the intense dryness fueling wildfires.

Another blaze near Bullengarook, north-west of Melbourne, forced authorities to issue initial evacuation alerts which were later downgraded as the winds eased. Despite the tough circumstances, significant resources and strategies were deployed to combat the fires. More than 100 firefighters were actively battling various blazes across the state.
