Mediation Efforts Stalled During Metro Vancouver HandyDART Strike

Negotiations struggle to bring about resolution as workers demand fair wages amid service disruptions

Mediation Efforts Stalled During Metro Vancouver HandyDART Strike

Metro Vancouver is currently embroiled in the throes of unrest following the strike by HandyDART workers, with mediation efforts aimed at restoring service stalling. For those who rely on HandyDART, the specialized door-to-door service for individuals unable to use conventional transit, the impact of this strike has been significant and distressing.

The Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1724, which advocates for the approximately 600 HandyDART employees, has expressed frustration over the slow pace of negotiations. Union president Joe McCann indicated the union was prepared to negotiate continuously, but reports have emerged indicating the employer, Transdev Canada, would not be able to submit its counterproposal until September 12.

This delay marks over six days since the HandyDART workers initially walked off the job, primarily to demand fairer pay and working conditions. The union has asserted its members deserve to be compensated comparably to similar roles elsewhere across Canada, and noted low wages hinder efforts to both attract and retain talented employees. McCann’s assertions draw attention to broader concerns about wage disparities across the transit industry.

Compounding these labor disputes, HandyDART has ceased nearly all operations, continuing only minimal service to facilitate urgent medical journeys. This service interruption has left many long-time users scrambling for alternative transportation methods. Lynn Johnston, one such user, noted the challenges she faced; with her wheelchair, she found it exasperately difficult to navigate the conventional transit system during the strike. “I had to get out of my chair and rely on the kindness of strangers to get my chair unstuck and loaded onto the train,” she recounted, framing the situation as overwhelmingly negative.

The tension reached its peak as the union organized rallies, including one planned to take place outside the office of TransLink, the metro area’s transit authority. Members of the union and affected users alike have gathered to express their frustrations and push for quicker resolutions to the negotiation process.

While both sides of the negotiation table seem to be under pressure, union supporters hope the mediated discussions will result in the reinstatement of services sooner rather than later. Throughout the dispute, the union has remained steadfast about the necessity of securing fair compensation for its workers, reiteratively emphasizing their commitment to maintaining high service quality and meeting the needs of vulnerable transit users across the region.

Transdev, prior to the strike, had indicated its intention to raise pay by approximately 19.2 percent by January 2026, but this offer was met with rejection from union members, who argued it fell short of what was required to make their wages competitive and sufficient for living costs.

Overall, the rise of mediator-led negotiations offers some hope amid this tumultuous period. Both sides have expressed intentions to resume talks, and many are watching closely to see if these mediated discussions can effectively bridge the gap between the union's demands and the employer's offerings. Meanwhile, Metro Vancouver residents hold their breath as they await resolutions to what has become more than just a labor dispute—it's also about ensuring fair and adequate public transit for those reliant on services like HandyDART.

It remains clear, though, the impacts of this strike stretch beyond the logistics of the transit system; they resonate deeply with the community's commitment to inclusion and accessibility for all its members.
