Mayank Agarwal Joins RCB As Padikkal Replacement

Injury to Padikkal opens door for Agarwal's return to RCB after over a decade

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have made a significant move in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season by signing Mayank Agarwal as a replacement for the injured Devdutt Padikkal. This decision comes as RCB aims to secure a playoff spot and ultimately, their first IPL title.

Devdutt Padikkal, a crucial player for RCB, has been ruled out for the remainder of the season due to a right hamstring injury. The left-handed batter has been a standout performer, scoring 247 runs in 10 innings at an impressive strike rate of 150.60, including two half-centuries. His absence will undoubtedly be felt as RCB pushes towards the business end of the tournament.

Mayank Agarwal, who returns to RCB after more than a decade, brings a wealth of experience to the team. Having previously played for RCB from 2011 to 2013, Agarwal has participated in 127 IPL matches, accumulating 2,661 runs, which includes one century and 13 fifties. He joins RCB for a price tag of ₹1 crore, a move that has been welcomed by the franchise.

“It’s really unfortunate to lose Devdutt at this stage of the tournament, especially after the impact he’s had this season. He’s been a key part of our top order. We wish him a speedy recovery. At the same time, we’re pleased to welcome Mayank Agarwal to RCB. His experience and versatility will prove valuable for us as we head into the business end of the season,” said Mo Bobat, Director of Cricket at RCB.

RCB currently sits in second place in the IPL 2025 standings with 16 points from 11 matches, boasting eight wins and three losses. They are tied on points with the Gujarat Titans, who lead the table, and are closely pursued by the Punjab Kings, Mumbai Indians, and Delhi Capitals.

The team’s upcoming matches are critical as they look to solidify their position in the playoffs. RCB will face the Lucknow Super Giants in Lucknow on May 9, followed by a home match against the Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 13, and then they will host the defending champions, Kolkata Knight Riders, on May 17.

With Agarwal back in the fold, RCB fans are hopeful that his presence will add depth to the batting lineup, especially as they navigate through these crucial matches. Known for his ability to anchor innings and accelerate when needed, Agarwal is expected to complement RCB’s existing batting core effectively.

The decision to bring Agarwal back to RCB has been met with enthusiasm from the fanbase. The club’s social media announcement read, “After 12 long years, ’ where he belongs. Happy #HomeComing, Mayank. The 12th Man Army will be on top of the moon hearing this, and they’ll all be right behind you.”

As the IPL 2025 season progresses, the stakes are higher than ever. RCB’s management and players are fully aware of the challenges ahead, but with the addition of Agarwal and the existing talent in the squad, they are poised to make a strong push for the playoffs.

In conclusion, while the loss of Padikkal is a setback, the signing of Mayank Agarwal could be a pivotal moment for RCB as they look to navigate the remaining fixtures and secure their spot in the IPL playoffs. The coming weeks will reveal if this strategic move pays off for the franchise.
