Ujjain is abuzz with excitement as preparations for the auspicious occasion of Mahashivratri are set to turn the city and its iconic Mahakaleshwar Temple alive with devotees and festivities. Every year, this day attracts thousands who come to pay homage to Lord Shiva, and this year is no exception, with expectations of over 10 lakh devotees visiting the temple.
The Mahakal Temple, one of the 12 renowned Jyotirlinga shrines, is gearing up for extraordinary festivities. According to Neeraj Kumar Singh, the Ujjain Collector and Mahakal Temple Committee Chair, special arrangements have been implemented to accommodate this monumental surge of pilgrims. The temple management anticipates around 10 lakh visitors throughout Mahashivratri, enhancing their logistical and security measures accordingly.
Beginning on the night of February 26, 2025, at 2:30 AM, the temple doors will open for devotees, initiating the festivities with the sacred Bhasma Aarti, where offerings of sacred ash symbolize Lord Shiva. This ceremonial event is expected to draw crowds early, with fervent followers eager to witness and participate.
On February 27, pilgrims can enjoy continuous darshan (viewing) of the deity for 44 hours without interruption. The time-honored rituals planned include various forms of pujas (worships), starting with the Dadyodak Aarti early on Mahashivratri morning and later, the Bhog Aarti. Each ritual contributes to the vibrant energy and devotion prevalent during this period, ensuring the sacredness is felt throughout.
The temple’s decorations are garnering attention too; this year, 2000 kilos of exotic flowers are expected from various nations including Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore. Led by renowned floral designer Krishnamurti Reddy, 40 artists have dedicated themselves to transforming the temple's ambiance, preparing breathtaking floral arrangements to honor the spirit of the festival.
“We use around 30 types of flowers this year, focusing on white and yellow shades, aiming to create a mesmerizing experience for the devotees,” said Anand Kumar, one of the decorators involved. This grand floral display will not only embellish the sanctum sanctorum but also spread joy and devotion among the attendees.
Besides the floral arrangements, security is of utmost priority. Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma has confirmed the deployment of approximately 2000 police personnel to manage the massive influx of devotees and maintain order. An extensive surveillance system, including over 200 CCTV cameras and drones, will monitor the temple grounds to safeguard the visitors and event proceedings.
For many devotees, Mahashivratri is not merely about visiting the temple; it signifies deep-rooted beliefs and traditions. Legend has it this is the day when Shiva and Parvati were wed, symbolizing the union of masculinity and femininity—a theme prominent across various segments of Hindu culture. Reflecting on past experiences, last year's Mahashivratri saw around the same number of devotees as predicted this year. The temple's authorities express confidence based on previous records, bolstered by efforts put toward enhancing the temple experience and the rigorous security arrangements made.
