Ovechkin Scores 883rd Goal But Capitals Fall To Flames

Despite another milestone for Ovechkin, the Capitals lose 3-1 to Calgary at home.

On February 26, 2023, the Washington Capitals faced off against the Calgary Flames at Capital One Arena but ended the night disappointed, suffering a 3-1 defeat. Despite the loss, the game featured some notable performances, particularly from Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin, who netted his 883rd career goal, placing him just 11 goals shy of Wayne Gretzky's all-time NHL record of 894 goals.

The game started on shaky ground for the Capitals. Less than halfway through the first period, the Flames struck first when Martin Pospishil scored at 10:13. Not long after, Matt Coronato doubled Calgary's lead at 15:43, leaving the Capitals down 2-0 heading to the locker room. Washington struggled to find their footing as they headed to the second period, trailing by two goals.

Despite their efforts, the second period saw no goals from either team, bringing the score to the final period still at 2-0 for the visitors. Hope flickered for Capitals’ fans when Ovechkin found the back of the net at 43:11, assisted by fellow players Dylan Strome and John Carlson. The goal was Ovechkin's second consecutive scoring event, following his recent hat trick against the Edmonton Oilers earlier this week.

Ovechkin, now with 47 points (30 goals, 17 assists) across 42 games this season, highlighted his remarkable talent and experience, as he has now scored 30 or more goals in 19 of his 20 seasons—a feat only missed during the pandemic-shortened 2020-2021 season. His relentless pursuit to chase Gretzky's goal record keeps fans excited about the future games.

Just as the Capitals seemed poised for a potential comeback, the Flames struck again. Jonathan Huberdeau sealed the game with Calgary's third goal at 54:01, taking advantage of some defensive lapses from the home team. The final score was set at 3-1, marking the Flames' second consecutive win and the Capitals' first loss after prior victories.

This loss does not diminish the Capitals' standing, as they currently lead the Eastern Conference, boasting strong statistics. With 24 games left in the regular season, they aim to build on their performance and secure playoff positioning.

Statistically, Ovechkin's current scoring pace propels discussions about whether he may break Gretzky's long-standing record before the end of the season. His average of 0.71 goals per game this season indicates he could potentially eclipse the cherished record during the Capitals’ away game against the Carolina Hurricanes on April 3.

Looking onward, the Capitals will look to rebound against the St. Louis Blues on February 28. Focused on maintaining their top position, both the team and fans will be eager to see if Ovechkin can continue his impressive performance to etch his name even closer to the top of hockey history.
