Massive Fire Breaks Out At Schifferstadt Recycling Plant

Firefighters battle blaze in industrial area as residents warned to stay indoors

On Saturday, May 3, 2025, a large fire erupted at a recycling plant located in an industrial area of Schifferstadt, Rheinland-Pfalz, sending thick smoke billowing into the air and prompting immediate action from local emergency services. The fire started in the outside storage area of the facility, which is operated by the Becker disposal company, and has since covered an area of approximately 1,000 square meters.

As firefighters from the Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis responded with a significant contingent, the control center in Ludwigshafen issued a warning to residents, advising them to keep windows and doors closed due to the smoke causing odor nuisance and visibility impairments. "The smoke can lead to unpleasant odors and hinder visibility," stated Jan Slotmann, a spokesperson for the Schifferstadt fire department.

Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries. "According to current information, there are no injured people," Slotmann confirmed. The cause of the fire remains unclear, and investigations are ongoing.

The fire, which broke out around 8:30 AM, has led to the release of combustion gases, prompting further safety measures. Residents have been advised to avoid the affected area and to keep all access roads to the fire site clear. Additionally, they are urged to turn off ventilation and air conditioning systems to prevent smoke from entering their homes.

While the situation is still tense, the fire department has reported that the fire is now under control. However, extinguishing operations are expected to continue for several hours. The fire brigade has also requested assistance from the Technisches Hilfswerk (THW), which is on-site to help pull apart the burning waste with a wheel loader. An estimated 4,000 cubic meters of mixed waste is involved in the fire.

Local authorities have set up a hazard hotline for residents to call for more information: 06235-4910021. The Schifferstadt through road is currently closed as a precautionary measure.

As firefighting efforts continue, the community remains on alert, with officials monitoring the situation closely. The fire department reassured the public that there is no immediate danger to the population, emphasizing that safety measures are in place to protect residents from potential hazards.

This incident highlights the challenges faced by emergency services in managing large-scale fires, especially in industrial areas where hazardous materials may be involved. The quick response from the fire brigade and cooperation with other emergency services have been crucial in controlling the situation and preventing any injuries.

As the investigation into the cause of the fire unfolds, local authorities will continue to provide updates to the public regarding safety measures and the status of firefighting operations. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and follow safety protocols as the situation develops.
