Inspired by the late Derek Jarman, the Jarman Award aims to spotlight UK-based artists whose work pushes the boundaries of imagination, experimentation, and innovation. Tafakory’s unique approach to filmmaking includes mixing found footage with her original creations, emphasizing themes such as intimacy and expression, particularly within the complex social fabric of post-Revolutionary Iran.
Tafakory’s body of work captures her as both a historian and poet of her cultural environment. Her projects, including recent works like the video essay Irani Bag (2020), intricately symbolize human connections through personal items such as handbags—wherein the bag transcends its mundane function to represent human touch and relationships.
