Manaus Police Seize Over 600 Stolen Phones

Major operations highlight community efforts to combat illegal cell phone trade and locate missing persons.

Police operations aimed at enhancing public safety were prominently featured this week as authorities conducted significant actions across Manaus. A coordinated effort between the Civil Police of Amazonas (PC-AM) and the Secretary of Public Security of Amazonas (SSP-AM) resulted in the seizure of over 600 stolen mobile phones and the apprehension of 37 individuals on November 6, 2023.

This operation unfolded primarily in the Centro de Manaus, targeting illicit activities related to the acquisition and sale of stolen devices. According to local delegate Marcelo Martins, "The aim is to combat the acquisition of stolen mobile phones at small businesses in the region. We monitored suspect locations and made seizures. Now, we will check the origin and return the devices to their legitimate owners."

Bruno Hitotuzi, director of the Cellphone Investigation and Recovery Office, added, "We're inspecting the illegal trade of cell phones. Our focus is to identify stores buying and selling these devices." This proactive approach demonstrates law enforcement's commitment to cracking down on the trade of stolen property, as various shops suspected of involvement were also inspected during the operation.

Alongside these enforcement efforts, the PC-AM is also addressing cases of missing persons. Recently, two individuals have been reported missing under varying circumstances, emphasizing the timely response needed when such situations arise. Alexia Vitoria Pereira Alves, 13, has been missing since February 5, 2023, last seen on Itagibá Street, located in the northern area of Manaus. Meanwhile, Dayane Lima de Almeida, 32, was last seen on February 2, 2023, in the Cidade Nova neighborhood.

Authorities have clarified important procedures for reporting missing persons, indicating urgency as cases do not require a waiting period of 24 hours for reporting. "Simply visit any police station with personal documents and provide detailed information about the last known location, physical characteristics, and recent photographs of the person." The police department encourages community members to participate actively by sharing any information they may have concerning these disappearances.

If anyone has knowledge about the whereabouts of Alexia or Dayane, the police have established contact points. You can reach the Deops at (92) 3667-7713, or the Depca at (92) 99115-1284, as well as contact the SSP-AM at 181. These channels aim to facilitate communication between the community and law enforcement, thereby accelerating the search for missing individuals.

Beyond this, the recent operations prompt warnings against the dangers of purchasing mobile phones from dubious sources. Hitotuzi cautioned, "Never buy mobile phones of dubious origin. Those who sell stolen devices can be indicted and face criminal charges." This serves as both a warning and guidance for community members to remain vigilant.

These operations signify the importance of joint efforts by law enforcement and the public, emphasizing collaboration as key to effective policing. With continued vigilance and active engagement from local residents, the goal of ensuring safety and accountability within the community is more achievable.

Through these initiatives, not only is illegal trade being targeted, but awareness is also being raised concerning issues such as theft and public safety, ensuring Manaus remains vigilant against criminal activities.
