LOS ANGELES - The streets of Los Angeles were rocked earlier this week by what can only be described as a harrowing incident involving the hijacking of a Metro bus, which culminated tragically with the death of one passenger.
The victim, 48-year-old Anthony Rivera from Los Angeles, was shot during the hijacking on Wednesday morning around 12:45 AM near Manchester Avenue and Figueroa Street. Authorities identified Rivera, who lived just blocks from the attack, as the man who lost his life amid the chaos.
Witnesses reported the bus was being pursued by law enforcement as it made its way through South Los Angeles toward downtown. The suspect, 51-year-old Lamont Campbell, eventually barricaded himself inside the bus, holding the driver and other passengers hostage during the ordeal.
When police apprehended Campbell after about an hour-long chase, they found Rivera suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite swift paramedic response and his transport to the hospital, his injuries proved fatal, leaving his family and friends devastated.
Rivera was remembered fondly by friends, who described him as outgoing and eager to help those around him. “He always looked out for others,” shared Brian Kitchen, who worked alongside Rivera at his job. Further testimony from friends suggested Rivera was not someone who would stand idly by; Michael Johnson, another friend, speculated, "I wouldn’t be surprised if Anthony stood up to the person who had the weapon on the bus, because that's the type of person he was.”
Meanwhile, Lamont Campbell remains behind bars, facing charges of murder and other related offenses. Campbell was apprehended after he reportedly boarded the bus and confronted the driver with a firearm, prompting the driver to set off the emergency alarm. This decisive action activated the 911 system directly from the bus, alerting authorities to the hijacking.
Initial reports indicate Campbell may have been trying to rob the passengers, but investigators have yet to confirm the motive behind this shocking incident. Police are continuing to piece together the events leading up to the hijacking. He is currently being held on $2 million bond at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility.
