Lisa Goodwin-Allen, the acclaimed chef-patron of Northcote, a Michelin-starred restaurant in Langho, is making a remarkable return just weeks after announcing her departure. This comes after the restaurant's sale to Alf and Clare Ellis, the husband-and-wife team behind the successful Pontefract-based kitchen manufacturer Ultima.
Goodwin-Allen, who has been instrumental in Northcote's reputation and has held its Michelin star for an impressive 29 years, initially stepped away from her role at the end of March 2025. She cited challenges in securing necessary investments for the restaurant’s future as a primary reason for her departure. However, the new vision presented by the Ellis couple inspired her to return.
“I’m honestly so chuffed to be returning to Northcote with Alf and Clare as owners,” Goodwin-Allen said. “Northcote is a place that means so much to me, and I’m over the moon to be part of the next chapter. I’ve got to know Alf and Clare well over the years, and together, with the incredible team in the kitchen, front and back of house, we’ll continue to push the boundaries, offering guests an unforgettable experience and proper northern hospitality.”
The Ellis family plans to completely refurbish the existing space at Northcote, which includes transforming the restaurant into a more relaxed brasserie while also introducing a new fine dining restaurant led by Goodwin-Allen. This shift aims to create a more accessible menu for both guests and local residents. Alf and Clare Ellis shared their excitement about the new direction for Northcote, stating, “Our vision is to build on Northcote’s outstanding reputation, taking everything to the next level by introducing innovative and memorable experiences.”
They also plan to launch a dedicated wellness space, allowing guests to unwind in a luxurious setting, and expand event facilities to cater to a variety of occasions. “The goal is to transform Northcote into a true destination where visitors can indulge in world-class fine dining and unparalleled service,” they added. “We want the property to be synonymous with excellence – at the very forefront of hospitality, setting new standards for what a country house hotel can be.”
Craig Bancroft, managing director of Northcote, expressed his enthusiasm for Goodwin-Allen’s return, highlighting their long-standing professional relationship. “I’m particularly pleased to welcome Lisa back as chef patron. Having worked very closely with her for 23 years, I know our guests are going to be delighted that she’s back spearheading the next chapter. Her return will bring the energy and creativity that Northcote needs to keep it at the forefront of the very best of fine dining in the UK,” Bancroft said.
The Ellis couple’s journey with Northcote began over a decade ago when they first visited as guests during the renowned culinary festival, Obsession. Their admiration for the property and its culinary offerings led them to become loyal patrons. Now, as the new owners, they are committed to enhancing the hotel’s offerings while ensuring that Northcote remains a leader in luxury hospitality.
Alf and Clare Ellis are not new to the hospitality industry. They have built a successful business with Ultima, which has been operational for more than 40 years. Their entrepreneurial journey started when they could not find a quality kitchen for their own home and decided to create their own. This venture quickly expanded, leading to the establishment of a retail showroom and later, the launch of DIY Kitchens in 2003, which has since become a major player in the kitchen manufacturing industry.
In 2023, the couple was recognized in a list of Yorkshire’s richest people, with a reported net worth of £160 million. Their son, Matt Ellis, has also made headlines for acquiring Wakefield Trinity Rugby League Club, with plans to rejuvenate the community through sport.
As Northcote embarks on this new chapter, the focus remains on maintaining its legacy of excellence in fine dining and hospitality. Goodwin-Allen’s return, combined with the Ellis family's innovative vision, promises to elevate Northcote to new heights. “Ultimately, we see Northcote as one of the very best and most revered country house hotels in the UK,” the Ellis couple concluded.
With the combination of Goodwin-Allen’s culinary expertise and the Ellis family's commitment to luxury and innovation, Northcote is poised to redefine what a country house hotel can offer. Guests can expect not only exquisite dining experiences but also a holistic approach to hospitality that includes wellness and versatility in event hosting.
As the restaurant prepares for its transformation, the anticipation among loyal patrons and new visitors alike is palpable. Northcote, known for its remarkable history and reputation, is set to evolve further, promising a unique and unforgettable experience for every guest.
